Can You Still Afford to Go To The Pub?

Pubs are going to Price themselves out of business. Part of me does wonder if they reduced their prices, they'll earn more money, as it'll get more people in. I think there may be an argument for that however I think culturally the country has changed too and that is the main dilemma for pubs. Gone are the days when the majority of working men would go to the pub for a couple after work or spend the weekend there. It is almost unheard of amongst those 18-35 or even 40. There's far more awareness now around problems associated with alcohol, a billion more ways to socialise than go to the pub, people move around a lot more, different cultures in the country, a trillion more things to do other than a pint, finances far more complicated (more things to spend money on), a lot has changed. I would dare to suggest that pubs these days are continuously upping prices to match the dropping demand for their services. A pub without the 'gourmet burger', sofas, Coffee machine, books, board games, pistachio nuts for Ł100, Quiz nights, or just the expensive satellite sports package with multiple, expensive TVs, so on and so forth will inevitably struggle as they almost need a 'gimmick' or other form of income to supplement the loss of the near extinct light ale connoisseur. Just a theory from me however. Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

As an example, (not sure what of though) There's a (shi*t) pub near where I am, who even though they Are empty through the week - including Friday/saturday - reputedly make enough money out of their tremendously popular Sunday lunch to stay open for the rest of the week! The only 'PUB', pub I have drank in over the last decade or so was my former local where I was very much under the impression it was surviving due to a loyal customer base as it was tucked away, dingy and extremely dodgy. I loved it. One of the most notable of it's pulling powers however was the fact it had a very laissez-faire approach to marching powder, with even the landlord partook in occasionally. I used to play cards in there quite a bit and I remember the outrage at each pint going up by a whopping 10p! The only 'PUB', pub I have drank in over the last decade or so was my former local where I was very much under the impression it was surviving due to a loyal customer base as it was tucked away, dingy and extremely dodgy. I loved it.

subject to age this but i really miss the 2 tier glass cabinet on the bar. usually simply full of cheese rolls / cheese & onion. ready when required. after this came the quick cook burger, where the barmaid / man, would cook you a burger on a george foreman type press, behind the bar, with unwashed hands. my uncle used to run the george n dragon pub in Downe(late 80s-early90s) they had a heap od cooked sausaged in a cabinet on bar that you could get in a bun, onions, ketchup with the drinks order. thats whats required. Kids,tired of being bothered by your pesky parents? Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.
