Sounds delightful.

I don't get that het up about the NHC (outside of people insisting on referring to it as 'Carnival'. If it was the only one in the world or even the first one then fine. But it's not). People have fair warning about what it is going to be like and therefore have a choice about going on not. I choose not to go.

I feel sorry for the cops who have to put with all that s*** but they chose to do the job knowing full well it would come with policing the NHC so it is just part and parcel of it all.

Our of interest have either the NHC or the Gays tried to copyright either term?

and what next ? Straight-shame ?

I say this as someone of Jamaican descent and someone who attended Carnival this weekend (Sunday) and for previous years.... but NHC needs to go, be regulated or concept changed completely.

It's an amazing event when you're part of the very high percent of people who go and come across no drama. There were more than 2 million people who attended, over 200 arrests (call it 250) and 1 death. That's a 0.0125% arrest rate. A lot less than a football event. This year's seemed to be very culturally diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly, something most caribbean countries are not.

That being said, it's overcrowded and unsafe, there's still violence and the massive clean up job and disturbance to the local residents. I was astounded that the entry points to carnival had UNMANNED metal detectors, what' the point? There were many other entry points that were not manned or had no metal detectors.

I'd love a safe space to celebrate my culture, so why can't Notting Hill be a 3-day festival? Move it to a very large park, charge a reasonable fee, alcohol and drugs can be controlled in-house and there would (potentially) be less need for a Police presence, which could be funded by the festival itself, more concentrated noise, a bit of money generated.

Otherwise, get rid of it. I don't think I'll be back.
