the French want to sack Macron. The bankers, in the City of London, would love to see one of their own in Downing Street.

In actual fact the new leader of the Conservative Party, who of course will be our next Prime Minister, will be announced at a ceremony in Westminster at 12.30pm tomorrow.

That person faces gargantuan challenges and the 'In-Tray' is certainly daunting.

Of course the MPs could, as my own pointed out to me personally last week, decide not to confirm the leader as PM. Theoretically, as Parliament is sovereign, they can choose who-ever they feel commands the confidence of the House.

I wager a substantial majority of them would like to do just that, but that the Tories won't, for fear of being deselected by the political activists who currently have much more power than is healthy. What a corrupt system. It needs to go.

Liz Truss is the overwhelming favourite to win but I can't understand why. As International Trade Secretary she claims to have done a number of trade deals with various countries after Brexit but in reality the vast majority of those were just EU deals rolled over. As Foreign Secretary she managed to obtain the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe but that was done by giving in to the sort of blackmail that the country said that they wouldn't do. She has also insulted the leader of our closest European neighbour which may or may not have repercussions.

The people that know her best are the Tory MPs who worked alongside her for years but knowing her they preferred her rival yet the 160,000 mainly old buffers who get to vote in the new leader decided that they knew best and made her the favourite for the job.

Dark times ahead

I completely agree. If you saw her on Kuenssberg this morning, she was awful. Promising stimulating the economy via tax cuts to provide a bigger cake for all to share, at some uncertain future time. Of course, the wealthiest would get then even bigger slices and can survive quite well until then anyway. Jam tomorrow promises are the stock-in-trade of the devious politician since time began, but useless to those without any bread to put it on today.

Truss is an even bigger populist than Johnson, saying whatever appeals to her current audience, without any kind of actual plan.

Dark times indeed.

Worth between 8 and 12 million our lizzy apparently- I doubt she can really feel the current crisis facing the country- I have a feeling she is being put in place to fail, only for calls by the lemmings to bring back bungle! On the plus side, she is so so dumb, that the only way is up! If she can find the door to the chamber and get to the right seat- I call that a start!

Have to hope that providing benefits to all, rather than tax cuts that do not help non tax payers is seen as the way forward. Shopping vouchers for buying British Produce springs to mind. Not sure how it could be applied to Farmers' Markets - leaving others to give thought.

Seems a bit heartless, even for the Tories.

I'm 73 and I can't believe how British politics has descended to this abject level. So we don't want Truss, we don't want the Tories either so who DO we want? Voting isn't pic'n'mix, we can't have a bit of this and a touch of that; we have to put a cross in a box so who will it be then, Ed Davey? Coalition led by Sturgeon? Star..., I choked on the last one because some things are too laughable even for this site. Answers on a postcard.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.
