Could not believe the ease in which Truss brushed aside that ghastly, dreary,boring Starmer,who has had such an easy ride to date with Boris Johnson's failings and perhaps,things are looking brighter for the Tories.

Labour's " Red Bus " mantra os energy companies have 170bn in profits, this is an assimptive guess from an Op Ed so totally misleading and they know it. Labour's own number on additional windfall tax revenue was 8 billion, which a lot of cash but less than 10% of the likely cost of the energy bail out which Truss is likely to announce. If there is an alternative to borrowing then someone please say what it is. This in economic terms is war time event, we need to look forward not back. Edited by HKOwen (08 Sep 2022 1.36pm)

Starmer got his revenge today- the new chancellor had his head in his hands, picking apart all things he had said in the past year- opposite to lizzys speach- oh well,it was nice while it lasted!

In Liz we Truss? I think not. Just heard the new Chancellor's speech. They stopped just short of having an open day at the BoE for each Tory party member to help themselves to a few gold bars. What a disaster ... fasten your seat belts we're in for a very rough ride!

Not sure the BoE would welcome them to an open day though – they're on a collision course Also the fracking ban being lifted is a total red herring, absolutely pointless – clearly lobbied by some moneyed charlatans in exchange for support and donations. Anyone worried about fracking becoming a thing again would do well to listen to the ex-CEO of cuadrilla talking earlier this week – they can lift the ban, but it's dead in the UK. For the foreseeable any domestic source of energy needs to be exploited while we shift the fuel mix of generation. Decades of poor decisions going back to the late 90's

If it does great.

Economic policy at a macro level always has a lot of moving parts that influence each other. There is apparently a forecast that basically says if the economy can grow 1% a year in the next five years the cost of todays announcements become self funding. Let's hope it all works out on the positive side. To be fair Reeves and Labour have no alternatives and just throw out old, tired cliches and sound bites.

The FT also hope this works. Certainly don't sound optimistic about it. '£45 billion of tax cuts. This is biggest tax cutting event since 1972. Barber's "dash for growth" then ended in disaster. That Budget is now known as the worst of modern times. Genuinely, I hope this one works very much better.'

I think there’ll be an ele.ction in 2023 rather than 2024. They know there’s a good chance and they’re cutting the hell out of taxes while having to hand out support. We have a PM who very few have confidence in during the most turbulent times. Take a big risk in round 12, may as well. Clear the decks when the party (power) is over.

An assumption that the opposition could do no better is not a reason to support this dross It's a knee-jerk attempt at populist policy (for core tory voters) that on current probability will backfire massively. Markets appear to agree. Pound and yields doing brilliantly
