Fair enough. I suppose it's a personal reaction. I had nothing against Diana; she just didn't mean anything to me and I didn't see what she'd done to warrant such a response.

Ok, well its going to be a great send off anyway!

In North Korea when a leader dies they have hours of drivel on TV about how wonderful the late, unelected, leader was and all cultural and sporting activities are stopped.

Such a thing could never happen in the democratic West, could it?

What is very interesting is the angry reaction to david’s very accurate observation.
Most human beings respond very favourably to deities. The vast majority find huge moral comfort in having the superior power to look up to who is there to protect them.
Where it is or within which regime is irrelevant to his comment, but the inevitable reaction on here confirms the human being shows a natural defensive reaction to this fundamental phenomenon which clearly remains as part of our make up and the modern world has had no impact upon it.

I believe it is called respect for the dead and it is the timing of his statement. If he had made this after the funeral some might have questioned his example of using a murderer as a comparison but right now it is bad taste.

I would also make the point that much of what I dislike about the royal family is actually the way the media reports it and not them. E.g. small child holds mother's hands on first day of school becomes a national event for the "meeja".

If he had said he was annoyed by the coverage and that the media was going over the with endless 24 hour coverage I would have agreed with him.

This is done by agreement with the press pack though..... they get a photo of the royal children, the public are satisfied that they get to see said children, and then the press leave them alone to get on with their young lives without constant intrusion of the cameras, so at least it's only the first day at school.

Understood but it is the way the pictures are presented and the fawning articles by the media that irritates.

As I said I don't blame the royals.

Have you heard of satire? Johnathon Swift did not literally mean that people should eat babies. I was showing the hyprocricy of how the UK media (rightly before anyone says anything) criticises Rusia and N Korea because of their constant adulation of the leaders of those counties but does not see that is what they do here in relation to the monarchy.
For the avoidance of doubt I was not saying that the Queen was like a North Korean dictator. The point is the absurdity of the reaction to her death.

Consistently ignorant I see, just keep making stuff up if it helps your cause, no one really cares I think.

Simple math is Age + retired Trade Union official = ignorant ideologue

A key difference which you clearly (and I assume deliberately) missed is the freedom to not show adulation and to criticise, making your comparison absurd, deliberately provocative and insensitive.

See my answer above. It is satire. Something over the top to make a point.

Stupid to try and argue that the mourning of the Queen can be remotely compared to the forced grieving of a dictator.

Yes it has been occasionally over the top (Liz Truss - The Queen was the rock upon which Modern Britain was built!?), but you can still tweet an offensive and disrespectful remark and the worst you will get is the sack from your cushy radio job.

If you don't come out on the streets and cry when ordered to in somewhere like NK you're thrown in prison. Actually say something nasty about the late dictator and you're frying tonight.

See my answer to other posters. It is satire to make a point. I have sympathy for any family when some dies but this over the top generation of pseudo grief says more about the political structure we live in than anything about the deceased person.

TV news bulletins are 95% about it. There is a crisis affecting everybody about energy, cost of living, NHS, a massive war in Europe, strong possibility of a massive radiation escape etc but the death of a 96 year old is deemed overwhelmingly more important. If Putin said he was going to send a nuclear bomber here it would only be a footnote at the moment.
The newspapers have no news in them just a load of grovelling. If someone who was a combination of Steven Hawking/Mother Teresa/President Zelenski died I would not expect this mech coverage3746529]

Which is the definition of satire.
