Looking at the aerial pictures I am far from convinced about this new stand. It is so big and out of proportion to the rest of the ground. Part of the problem is I think going for a construction method that builds over the existing stand. Surely a more modest new stand would be far more appropriate for Selhurst Park and the local community. Currently it is going to tower over everything. The inadequate Arthur Wait stand and the reduced White horse are both going to look like ancient relics alongside the new one. Plus, the new stand and the Homesdale clash horribly in architectural terms. Carefully consider Palace before crawling ahead at snails pace. Building a smaller stand will be far cheaper and can still go over the top on construction. It just wouldn’t be so grand. But is one Grand stand what we want while the White Horse reduces to a few rows to get an enlarged pitch in and the Arthur looks across from the past. All very imbalanced in my view.

With regard to the bigger pitch, I believe this is to qualify to host International games. Personally I wouldn’t pay International prices to have the awful facilities on offer. Perhaps the club should improve what’s on offer before worrying about pitch size

Presumably the new Grand Stand is a step towards the whole stadium eventually being rebuilt / modernised, kinda one side at a time, my guess is that once we have this one side built or at least under construction future side projects will go from drawing board to construction faster, although the time that this one side has been under discussion I doubt the likelihood that I will live to see any more than 2 sides completed -

FYI - The above is purely supposition I have nothing to support it at all but as Dream says the rest of the stadium will look run down & out of proportion to the new stand -

Of course, but I am hoping it is a work in progress. It will take years, but with the main stand built, the others will follow at a less glacial pace but when resources allow.

We are not Spurs or Liverpool. We cannot do the whole job in one go.

Edit: just read Dubai's post who guesses the same thing.

i know what you are trying to say but it is the Liverpool model we appear to be following. They have extended Anfield one stand at a time and have massive restrictions due to the close proximity of housing near the ground.

In fact i think we are using the same architects for our main stand who did the Liverpool equivalent. The ability to build around the current stand was a big attraction i think

Like many of you, I can remember the Arthur Being built, then the White Horse being squared off with two tier cement blocking and terracing, then the Homesdale stand being built then the White Horse stand. All were built within the confines of the Palace owned land although to this day I do not know how Ron Noades got permission for the Homesdale. The rest of the street must have been up in arms.
Whatever happens doesn’t bother me or I doubt anyone else who is a tied on Palace fan for life. For anyone in most of the ground we are ok with pretty ropey conditions! All part of our passion for the club.
However, if, and it’s a big if, we want to go big time to compete at top level, Selhurst is not our best option. I would recommend a new stadium and deliver it in one fell swoop.
Ok, it might take 5-10 years to find the right site and battle it through our depressingly slow planning system and of course the Mayor of London powers and central government but we would then have the infrastructure to go big time.
We’ve achieved the academy now we need to really roll our sleeves up and go big time for a Crystal stadium. One that will shine out as a global wonder.
In my view the obvious setting is Crystal Palace park. With a huge amount of time, energy, enthusiasm and belief supported fully financially aka the Thais, I believe it could be pulled off.
The big question is, do we have the will to pull it off?
For me the alternative is a modest new Main stand to take capacity to say 31000 and have a balanced Selhurst
Either way, make sure and protect the Palace.

How long of that 5-10 years does it take to find a new site before legalities? One look at a map? Where do you propose?

Crystal Palace park won’t be happening for decades. It sits on 3 boroughs with fierce local nimby resistance. They don’t want the crowds and behaviour that big crowds and teams attracts. Very different to clubs outside of London.

But aren't we doing it this way because we looked at the build a new stadium option and there wasn't anywhere for the club to build locally?

CP park just isn't going to happen, it's been talked about back and forth for donkey's years and there's the complication of being on the border of one or two (or is it three?) boroughs and the residents will never be in favour of it.

Say though we did spend 5 - 10 years grinding down the locals and councils to eventually get planning permission, then say 18 months (?!?) to build the shiny new stadium, what do we do in the meantime? If we think Selhurst Park is crappy in places now, what will it be like in 10 years? Might not be safe to use!

I'm not sure if this is the right approach, but if we get the main stand done and the rest follow quickly afterwards, we might have the facilities, infrastructure and stadium that better reflects where we are and where we want to go along with still being in Selhurst Park.

The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots

Indeed. I have no idea why people keep returning to this as though it is a viable option.

'In January 2011, Palace announced plans to build a 40,000-seater stadium in Crystal Palace Park at a cost of up to £90million, but the project was scrapped before any planning permission was sought.

Returning to the park would be almost certainly unworkable due to the expected fierce opposition of local residents and the relatively poor transport links, which would make it difficult to achieve planning permission.

There are no realistic sites within the borough for relocation. In any case, starting all over again would be a lengthy and costly process, for which the club has shown no appetite.'

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

One of the things I've been thinking about is the club sending a letter to all the South London, maybe Kent/Sussex/Surrey local authorities - and asking who would like, and who would be helpful and amenable to having a Premier League football team and it's accompanying business, trade and associated benefits. Who will back us and cherish having us?
Our local council seems to be actively unhelpful, let them continue without Palace - there's little else in the area, calling it a dump would probably be accurate - so I say f*** them and move. It's not that big a deal, in my opinion, where we are as long as it's South London somewhere. I'd say 50% or more of fans don't live in the immediate area anymore, although most of us will likely have come from there.

I am due to reach the ripe age of 70 in November (God willing) and there is every chance that my rump will not make contact with a comfortable seat in the New Stand.I have entertained the thought that I will not see a single new brick as part of the building process.

I am approaching the age when you just do not buy green bananas.

I'm fifty next birthday, and assume I'll never see it either. We're both Scorpios.
