This is just a Christmas thing now. Every year, usually on Boxing Day, we settle down round the dining table with a couple of bottles, some chocolates and licorice allsorts for me to play an assortment of Go For Broke, Game of Life or Goldrush.

So, as you can tell from the games we play, nothing too intellectually challenging or time consuming. Just enough to maintain a tradition and satisfy the kids (who are now over 40).

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I have young kids and we play loads of board games. They're more common than what you might think as family and friends also play with their kids.

Also board game cafes are a bit of a thing. There's one in Croydon [Link]

The children's Monopoly version is pretty good as you can complete the game in 30-40-minutes, or if we run out of time before bed time we take a picture of the board, make a note of how much money everyone has, and start from that point next time.

Trivial Pursuit a fair few years back. It was one of the first editions of the game, but the questions were still relevant.

As I get older i don't seem to have the stamina to play long games, or indeed the interest.

Actually, I recall a fearsome game of scrabble one Boxing Day. It lasted just one go (mine). I started with the seven letter word "ADVENTS", and immediately got challenged. Lacking a dictionary and the internet, a Jack Daniels-fuelled argument took hold and the game was eventually abandoned. Typical family Christmas

My wife and I have a couple at home we pull out on occasions and would highly recommend: Tension and Articulate.

Tension: Essentially family fortunes (top ten list).

Articulate: Word chosen from one of a few categories and you have to explain the word to your teammate without saying the actual word. Some resort to something akin to Charades whilst playing this which is strictly prohibited!

Asides from that Triv is the only other one that sees the light of day but that is very much dependant on company. The world seems to not understand the value of knowing anything you can instantly google these days!

More 'quiz' than board games really but all good fun!

Bearing in mind it was Christmas time, my extended family members were fixated by the idea that Advent should start with a capital letter and was a singular event that could not be pluralised.
I tried arguing, with reference to the industrial Revolution, that there could be advents. However, trying to argue logic with competitors who have cumulatively consumed nearly 2 bottles of Jack Daniels is a battle you cannot win,...without using physical violence.
