This isn't going to wash this time. There'll be an election in January - if not before.

Sunak 119
Johnson 71
Mordaunt 25

Total represents 60% of Conservative MPs.

Let's hope that the remaining 40% won't vote or else realising that Mordaunt is a lost cause will vote for Sunak just to keep Boris out

Once again, the stupidity was in offering Truss as an option. But since it was MPs who decided on the final two you'll defend them anyway.

Once again, tactical voting. They wanted Sunak, but feared Mordaunt might beat him so offered up Truss as a sacrificial lamb.

What they did not anticipate was the crass stupidity of the particular electorate involved. It was obviously an error of judgement which I trust will be a lesson learned.

I am just wondering if the next move by Central Office would be to remove the whip from Johnson, on the basis that he is facing scrutiny which potentially could see him lose his seat, and as such ought, not be a candidate.

With a 72 billion hole to fill in the finances I'm amazed anyone wants the job.

God knows what the Chancellor is going to say at the end of the month but I don't think it's going to be popular with most.

From what I'm hearing tax rises only account for less than half that.

As expected, a predictable defence. When it comes to stupidity gambling with the country's future takes some beating. How many other candidates were eliminated in order for this master plan to work?
How do you know they didn't think Truss was a viable, and in some cases the preferred, option?

Their preference was Sunak. Mine was Hunt. Hunt was eliminated early but his reputation has taken an upturn since. Whether Hunt's talents were regarded by the MPs as highly as they are by me at the time, and just removed tactically, is unknown.

I agree it's not sensible but the stupidity is primarily with the system that demanded they thought that they must do that. I don't know that they didn't all think that Truss was viable, but there was enough comment from some, and plenty of evidence provided by Truss herself, that she was out of her depth.

I would give it up on the basis of a big loss and opposition parties f***ing it up in a decade or two.

It would appear austerity did not work but was it the solution
to Brexit? by the next tory term, we could be back in say an EEC.

Whoever is PM in the next years, whether Tory, Labour or coalition is going to have a torrid time, no sympathy and get the blame for almost everything.

We are all going to suffer in some way. Some much worse than others.

My own hope is that this will result in a fundamental, and long overdue, realignment in UK politics and, when it does, we will emerge stronger, better organised and able to face a changed world more realistically and effectively.

How long this might take, and whether I will live to see it, is another question. As is a re-entry, in some modified way.

There are many dangers ahead. The obvious ones with Russia and China, but also the integrity of the UK itself.

Just out of interest with Boris still facing an enquiry, if appointed would be then have to resign if found guilty of any impropriety?

Nothing. But I was asked an irrelevant question about what I had posted and the only reference in that request was about Covid and deaths.

It seems that you too cannot see the pun in the post, and only see it as offensive. I can't be bothered to fully explain the connection with 'cake' and 'party' to you as you wouldn't comprehend. So, get over it.

It looks like Sunak and Boris are splitting the party with Penny the Kingmaker.

I don't see a unity candidate emerging from this but there will be a winner and lots of disgruntled losers ready to back stab at the first opportunity.

You would think that the rational Tory MP / member would want to elect the person who the general electorate would more likely vote for...
Well they got it wrong first time because they had a choice of a right wing "string em up and send em back" blue rinse tory versus a well educated intelligent man but who has a brown face and who is richer than the whole cabinet 10 times over..the were never going to allow him to win.
I don't think they have a choice now, because the general electorate will not vote for Boris again. Note however that tory chairman Jakes Berry was knighted by Boris and he was his campaign manager when Boris first ran
