Given you can go to jail for openly criticising things in Qatar under its "Fake News" laws I imagine it would be quite hard to get many honest opinions from the workers. Legally employers are not allowed to hold onto their worker's passports anymore (after someone pushed their Filipino cleaner out the window and it caused a stir) but given everything is heavily weighted towards the small (and largely very wealthy) indigenous population I imagine that law is probably not always followed.

This WC is a joke anyway, even ignoring the human rights issues. I'm not sure I'm going to bother watching it, but not out of some form of armchair protest but simply because everything about it stinks, not least the fact it has been plonked in the middle of the domestic season.

The European domestic season, you mean.

Yes, I suppose that's a good point, although without looking I imagine 90%+ of the players at the WC play their football in Europe.

I see FIFA has told the competing teams to focus on football and not "other" issues.

Apparently Jurgen Klopp doesn't think it fair players should make political statements or protests during a tournament, but it's okay to take the knee in the PL.

You might as well have told Dr King not to protest in the deep south. As a bank robber explained to a judge why he robbed banks "It's where the money is".

On the passport thing - As 1st world nationals the prospect of someone else holding onto our passport whilst we work in a foreign land is obviously something that we wouldn't readily agree to (at least not willingly) however, just to put things into a bit of perspective - the employer in Qatar, large construction companies employing hundreds if not thousands of people, some skilled, some semi skilled, some labourers, mostly housed in labour camps, they are bussed to the work site in the morning & back again after the shift finishes, meals are provided etc - the companies are responsible for those people whilst they remain in country, they hold onto their passports & entry paperwork, employment visas, medical certification etc, often filed in fireproof safes to prevent people losing their documents / theft etc so that whilst they remain in country & when they are due to leave all their documentation is in one place / readily available & the company can book flights etc without worrying if the employee will turn up at the airport with the correct documentation, or even turn up at all -so, as I said at the beginning, it seems wrong to us but there are legitimate reasons behind some of the practices -

Shame FIFA doesn't concentrate on football themselves, rather than money.

I know, FIFA are basically saying stop talking about this clearly incredibly dodgy decision to give a country with a tiny population and an awful human rights record the most prestigious tournament in football (and how we clearly took bungs) and concentrate on the football. Nothing to see here.

Has anyone actually given a half decent reason as to why Qatar was given the WC? It's like hosting Crufts in Korea.

Well exactly. The WC is a reward a recognition of a country's contribution to world football. Qatar have never qualified and half their team is nationalised through some dodgy nationalisation schemes.

The other reason for granting a WC is recognition for a region e.g. South Africa for the contribution of African football. The only problem with that is Qatar is not on friendly terms with most of its neighbours and I doubt the ME believe that Qatar represent them.

So well done FIFA you might as well have given it to Israel to represent the ME.

FIFA telling people to 'concentrate on the football' for me is akin to having Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris, Joseph Fritzl and Prince Andrew on the panel for Britain's Got Talent and asking the audience to concentrate on the performances of those auditioning!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Once the tournament had been awarded pretty much the only thing that would have made any difference is countries refusing to participate & to do that they would have to stand up to their regional football confederation organisation & ultimately FIFA -

Who knows what ongoing retribution would follow any countries FA that defied those organisations & how long it would last.
