We'll be lucky to be top half but the last couple of matches have certainly helped. Don't let this mean that the club think they don't need to strengthen in January.

Finishing with a good win V Forest would leave us in a great position to push on. We could be 8th/9th going into the break and only one win from a europa place. Top 6? No, not this year at least. Top 10 suits me just fine, especially if we can avoid the prolonged agony of looking down.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

From the sublime to the ridiculous (and back again). Lose to Everton and we're nailed-on relegation fodder. Beat West Ham away and we're suddenly top six! Both are nonsense. We are neither. We are an established PL team in our 10th PL season who are playing at a level that will likely see us on the border between top half and bottom half - in other words, basically where we currently are. It is my opinion that all the teams currently above us (except Fulham) will likely finish the season ahead of us, so for me 9th is the highest we are likely to achieve. However, I see Villa and Leicester as genuine threats who might overtake us. Considering we are only part way through a major restructuring of our playing staff and did the minimal of business in the last window, we are currently IMO punching above our weight. whatever our result against Forest, it won't define our season.

I agree with all that. I think there are a few teams below us who are underperforming based on their squads but who also may well have money to invest in January to rectify it. Personally when Vieira took over I just wanted to see us play some exciting football and to avoid relegation. So far he's exceeded my expectations, but top 6 would take a minor miracle with the size and quality of our squad.

This is about right. We're stuck in mid table obscurity which is a relatively dull existence. We're progressing well, but the reality is we have the 'Big Six' and now Newcastle. Even if the likes of Man Utd have a poor season, it's extremely tough for us to finish ahead of them, plus one other. Parish is doing everything right. We're extending the stadium which will lead to more revenue and have a young squad who are all improving with experience. The future is bright. For a club our size it's almost impossible to cement ourselves as part of the top 6, we'd need a major outside investment like Chelsea, Newcastle and Man City, but would any of us honestly want that hollow success? A one off wonder season could get us in the top 6, but its not realistic at the moment. I think 8th this season is probably the best we can do.

From browsing around, it looks like we have the 11th highest wage bill in the Premier League. It basically means that the top 6 plus Leicester, West Ham, Newcastle & Villa should be finishing above us. Villa are poorly managed but otherwise, that's a fair representation of most fans' hopes. That logic supports ~8th being as good a season as we could ever expect to have without something completely incredible happening, as Newcastle's wage bill will get closer to the current top 6. Let the top 7 do their thing and then win the 'rest of the PL' award. We have about the 25th highest wage bill in Europe, similar to Napoli and Bilbao. Shows the pull of the Premier League for European talent.

Also, last season our win at the Etihad was followed by a home win over Wolves as was our win at Soton by a home win against Watford Edited by doombear (07 Nov 2022 5.37pm)
