Well missing 3 out of 5 was rubbish. Pope dived the same way every time. It doesn’t take a genius to work out you put it in the other corner.

Pope saved two to his left and one to his right . Good saves IMO rather than bad pens , though Mateta's run up if you can call it that made his look worse than it was

And we still need a striker

Let's put this into perspective:

Both Newcastle and Palace played mostly second teams.

Palace's bench was all academy, Newcastle brought on 1st team players (perhaps if it were at Selhurst it would have been reversed).

Even with the subs we still managed to have a goaless draw.

Penalty shootouts are mostly a crapshoot.

I'm not upset with today. Wish we would have won, but got in some valuable time for the backups.

Agree with this, useful game for PV to see different players in a competitive match

Guys... It's the Carabo cup. It means nothing. I'd worry if it had some impact on the prem... but it doesn't. It's a nice tourney, but it's meaningless in the end. No problem here. Move along...

Indeed. The only merit of this game was that it gave PV a chance to look at some of the other squad players.

The sad thing is a lot of the top sides are out already! Big chance to get to Wembley.

Yes, it was a bad night for London clubs with Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham and us all going out!

And Brentford the night before. Charlton got through though (the night before)!

I'M not despondent, look at it this way, the mega rich Newcastle have now gone three hours of football on their own patch and still can't beat us let alone score a goal. Perhaps they are not as good as they think they are. So they won a penalty shootout, Big deal!

I absolutely hate how this cup is treated/perceived.
We should be looking to win, always. It's a chance for silverware, to get to Wembley (Europe?).

If teams can't take it seriously, they might as well do away with it. Do we need two domestic cups?

I’m sure we had chances to score in the game but didn’t. Pens is a lottery.

Yes, a win against Forest, who beat Spurs last night. Who better than us to bring them back down to Earth?

West Ham hadn’t lost since august and we played them off the park. Forest away will be 3 points all day long. I’m having a bet so will put it where it is

This Cup has been largely a vehicle for Manchester City to add another cup in their cabinet.

Clubs tend to field weaker sides for this competition. In City's case they can field their reserve 11 who would probably get into the top six in the EPL.

Geordie here,

I'd snap your arm off for a League Cup. We've not won a major domestic trophy since man landed on the moon.

Wasn't surprised to see us both field much changed sides and although we did try to win it in 90minutes with our substitutions I think a 0-0 was a fair result. Pens are a crapshoot and Botman taking one was surprising, Bruno looking to put one into space was even more of a shock. Either way, delighted to get past a tricky fixture and on into the next round. Just gotta hope we avoid Man City entirely, or catch them putting out a weaker side due to CL commitments.

Re: the noise levels, it always ends up being quieter in Cup games because so many there are kids, families or whatever, fewer of the usual League crowd. Also, the game wasn't exactly one to get you up out of yours eats, was it?

Hope everyone who made it up had a good time regardless of the match/result.
