Watched the Brighton v Arsenal game and thought Brighton gave them a game in the second half. But one thing that struck me was the amount of new faces Brighton had on the pitch, not only that but how good they were.

They definitely seem to be tapping into some good low value imports atm.

They have indeed but it will be interesting to watch, now most of their top recruiting staff have left the club for bigger fish

It's an interesting point not least because when Brighton came up they made some terrible buys however in the last few season their recruitment has been excellent.

So I guess the question is what lessons did their learn? Apart from the obvious don't buy rubbish players.

Brighton Mac Alister, a relatively unknown player from Argentinos Juniors and his sale will result in a significant profit.
Caicedo was signed for £4 Mill but would command a much higher fee in the transfer market.
Cucurella was signed for £15 Mill and Chelsea signed him for a fee that could rise to over £60 Mill.
Bissouma was signed for £15 Mill and Tottenham signed him for a fee that could rise to £30 Mill.

Brighton's 'Net Spend' over 2017-18, 18-19, 19-20 was £190 Mill, ours over that period was under £10 Mill !

It amazes me that people think PV has a good squad of players and he is not using them properly, when the figures above don’t support this view. Our last transfer window was beyond a joke and I am sure this next one will be just as bad!

They have obviously been blessed by the pope or something , £27M for Drossard ? What are Arsenal thinking , they could have had Mateta for half that

And we still need a striker

Them and Brentford both rely heavily on analytics in their recruitment - the owners of both clubs made their money in using analytics to find value in different markets, and they've just applied the approach into their football clubs with a lot of success.

Presumably they've been refining as they go which is why the success rates of the signings has improved but I'd also imagine the nature of the model just means that certainly players who stand out statistically just don't make the jump up in level.

They still do waste a lot on players that you'll never see make it into the first team, but the upside on those that do is huge.

The 'moneyball' approach?

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Yeah, broadly it is that.

As I understand it, they focus on players who excel in some quite obscure underlying statistics, as opposed to the people who score or assist loads or more obvious measures.

So if they can find a player who runs x km every game, keeps the ball 85%+ and averages a few interceptions a game, even if nothing else about the player jumps out they would scout him as an option for a midfielder, for example.

They set parameters for what type of player they need, and let the data tell them who the candidates are.

As opposed to us who seem to just pull up an ex-players list every time we need a signing

In the good old days, managers used to have their "black book of contacts" and used to travel the length and breadth of the country in all weathers assessing players in midweek when their teams were not engaged in a match.

In this modern era, technology (Such as Wyscout /Scout7 etc), provides clubs with an array of information and statistics about footballers all over the world and there are recruitment teams accessing these details on a regular basis.
