Right. So just leave the Government in place then. Because that works so very well.

I agree with giving councils more power and resources that doesn't mean you need an elected mayor though a council leader is quite sufficient in most cases. I can see the argument for a mayor of London (although not this particular one) but a Mayor of Croydon or Lewisham is just pointless.

The problem with devolving power and money is everybody gets very parochial. Local politicians will always talk about local needs which they want the rest of us to fund, yet every time a a new housing project or airport is identified they are up in arms, build it somewhere else.

That is why the nimbies can be overruled by Westminster for the greater good of the country otherwise we will just have "I'm all right Jack, councils".

So there has to be a balance and currently central government has far too much power at the moment.

I agree with all of that, albeit not necessarily your view on the Mayor of London.

Our (Croydon) Mayor is absolutely not additive, but then he is no Andy Burnham. Such a shame it was he that got in and not Val Shawcross who would actually have had an impact

We are overgoverned - strip away as much government as we can.

I think an elected mayor of one borough is just too small I don't see what they can do that a council leader can't.

The problem with a Mayor that covers multiple areas e.g. Khan is that they comes into conflict with the local councils over resources money and power.

My own preference is for councils to organise themselves like the Northern Powerhouse so no directed elected leader but councils with shared interests working together.

Nobody seriously thinks it is anything other than a political slogan.

The regions are not much more than beggars at a rich mans table.

The German system much mooted where regional equality is built into the system, was actually the allies after WW2 who did not want central power to be in Berlin.

It has been floated here but never really been of much interest to voters, now it appears imperative.

Starmers plan to devolve power to communities is timely and constructive.

You still long for an anti semite to lead the country, seriously?

He has made an excellent impact on the planning committee.

In have argued that Croydon is to big to be a single town council, and needs to separate again into 2 separate entities.
There is no chance of city status so lets have somethin manageable.

Has he? Please elaborate. Planning in Croydon IMO has been rife with corruption for years, including when Perry led the Conservatives on the Council, but didn’t the changes predate having the Mayor?

Surely you mean senile old tax dodger left the UK in the seventies because he didn't want to pay Labour high taxes.

I have never understood politicians fascination with celebrity endorsements most of these people are completely unreliable and even hypocrites who usually end up becoming the story themselves. If I was PM I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

100 dynamic days?

Still mired in moral squalor it is now built-in really.

So much for restoring trust and integrity its amazing how these individuals are able to wriggle and squirm until the inevitable end.

He 'wears it well', but he'd 'rather go blind' than have any more of the tories.

Great idea- would save all that tedious rigmarole of a general election too...
