Yes I agree, the first signing was not announced until nearly 22:00 hrs.

I'm of course happy we have strengthened in the middle of the park and only time will tell if that is enough. I am concerned that the serious problem of scoring goals has not been solved and when a team concedes on average more than they score then the predicted outcome is not that positive, even with new midfielders!

I get what you're saying, but last season was our first one in the PL era in which we ended the season with a positive goal difference. We're more likely to lose by 3+ goals against the big teams than we are to win by 3+ goals against teams around our level, hence we generally finish the season with a negative goals difference.

I also think having a more solid base in midfield with more energy will actually help us create more chances. Doucoure has shown he has an attacking edge, while Lokonga and Ahamada both claim to be no.8s. If Edouard and Mateta can concentrate less on coming to find the ball and more time in the opposing box they might start scoring more.

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but like others have said, my expectations were so low for this window even signing Andre Ayew might have given me a semi!

I think this is a very good point that many have ignored. Yes, I'd have liked to bring in a quality forward (which isn't easy to do) but I think Ahamada and Lokonga on their own may well see an uptick in the performance of our forwards for the reasons you give. At the end of the day, goalscoring requires service as well as forwards who can put the ball in the net. It's not only Edouard and Mateta who will benefit from a steelier, more mobile central midfield with a genuine box-to-box contributor. The wide men (Wilf, Olise) should see the need to spend time looking back over their shoulders reduced too. Yesterday's signings might not give us more goalscorers, but they should make us a better and more attacking side.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

I'd give the window a 5 out of 10. We have at least addressed the issue we should have done in the summer regarding the options in midfield.
However, also feel we have slightly kicked the can down the road in that one of these players is a loan with no option to purchase and come the summer we will have only 3 decent midfielders in Ahamadu, Doucoure and Hughes. That will need addressing, we will need another right back, another left back, another forward and potentially a Wilf replacement. Reckon we will need about 7 and have little confidence we will get anywhere near that.
So a decent window to try and tackle the current issues but certainly not one that will help for next summer. A fire-fighting window perhaps.

RB could be Richards, Ademola is cover for Mitchell, a striker is a must, if Lokonga is good, sign him, and LW if Wilf goes, 3 i think will be 3/4 i think.

OK, so the OP is a total git then!

I personally didn't know about either signing until well after 10pm.

Dazza told us earlier in the day, what was going to happen. You need to pay more attention to his posts.

Mr Parish has led this club now for 10 years. 10 very successful years. But recently his priorities have been to build an academy and more recently develop Selhurst Park.

This has left us woefully short of cash for new signings at a time when for a few years we were lumbered with a high wage bill for poor signings.

We are now slowly coming out of that with contracts expiring for older players and a young fresh team.

We need to ride the storm and hope we can escape relegation until we do.

Solid window in my opinion and I went into it with the assumption that we'd probably sign nobody.

The midfield has been our weakest point and these additions will see us through to the summer, taking the burden off Doucoure. Now we can have a genuine crack at a top half finish.

We definitely need a big summer, potentially requiring another left back, right back, striker, replacement for Wilf AND another midfielders when Lokonga goes back. However for the rest of the season, we can play...

Guaita, Mitchell, Andersen, Guehi, Richards, Ahamada, Doucoure, Eze, Olise, Zaha, Edouard

...and still have Lokonga, McArthur, Clyne, Ward, Ayew, Mateta, Hughes etc as options. That's a much healthier state of affairs.

When we concede on average YTD in EPL 1.35g/per game and only score 0.9 coupled with our leading scorer out for at least six weeks, I think that is also a major problem!

The midfield weakness has, IMHO, contributed to both problems through insufficient support to the attacking players and to Doucoure and the defence.

I am hopeful that the new arrivals will result in improvements in both areas so that we can bring those figures nearer to parity.

I'm certainly in agreement with you on this but my main concern is we have not for sometime now had a really good striker who can anticipate and get into the 6 yard box to pick up those loose balls and who will harass the opposition when they try and play out from the back. In defence the right and left back position are also of concern as we lack both pace and robustness in these areas and sometimes the passing from the L&R back position is Sunday football standard. Lets just hope and pray we can survive this season but it is not going to be guaranteed until the team in 18th can not catch our points total from the remaining games that are left to play.

Sorry, Painter, although in my defence, Mrs YT and I did spend an hour yesterday evening watching an episode of 'Putin Vs The West'. I promise to be more focussed in August.
