The strange thing about De Boer was in his last game, away to Burnley, we played fantastic, 27 shots to their 4, the worst luck i have ever seen, and we lost 1-0, to a Chung Lee back pass, strange to think if we had won easily like we should have if he would have been sacked.

I always have wondered if he had indeed turned the ship, we certainly battered Burnley that day

I'm sorry but Luka is no longer the answer to any question other than 'Who is the next player to get booked?' He seems like a great character but he's no longer up to it at PL level and he takes so long on the ball the referee probably considers stopping his watch for timewasting.

The facts are that results against all but the big 6 are pretty good:

6 wins
4 draws
3 defeats

22 out of a possible 39 points

Against the big 6 (Chelsea, Arsenal, United, City, Spuds, Liverpool) they are not great:

0 wins
2 draws
6 defeats

2 points out of a possible 24

What this says to me is our more patient, controlled play is effective against weaker opposition, but doesn't offer enough threat against the big teams. On paper this puts us in a strong position if a similar pattern follows for the remainder of the season as we only have 4 games left against the big 6 due to the ridiculous scheduling of our fixtures.

Of course you cannot guarantee the second half will pan out the same as the first, but I do think our fixtures since the WC have cast a negative light on us as only the Fulham game is one we may have expected more from. In our 10 years in this PL stint our points against the big 6 are memorable, but few and far between.

I think its a fair assessment, we are certainly not as good as we used to be at sitting back soaking up pressure for ages and then counter attacking.

Feels like we need to find away of getting that back, for the better teams and for some general variety in build up.

I don’t get this obsession with Shaun Derry. The very epitome of a one trick pony style of management. He’s failed at two lower league clubs. His approach to player management may have been effective at junior level at Palace, but it’s a different scenario at first team level. The Sergeant Major methodology doesn’t work there.

Anybody on here played on his team in the Robert Eaton games ?

I have no obsession with Derry, and certainly would not give him the managers job full time, But, with the players we have, in my opinion, would have done a better job than PV in the short term, dont misunderstand me, i think PV is utterly hopeless at a club our size.

His managerial career after us showed he deserved no more games. Woeful manager.

Agreed, he's far too taken up with his own importance. He's right and everyone else is wrong.

This perfectly sums up the current situation with PV. His experiences as a player naturally lead him to want to play the game in a flowing, stylish passing style and with the teammates he had that was possible. The current Palace squad doesn’t have that amount of quality. A few players are capable of it, but not enough.

The board will not or cannot recruit enough high quality players as yet. Arguably it’s unfair of them to employ PV with instructions to completely change the way of playing without providing him sufficient resources to do so. Until they can or enough high standard young players graduate from the academy to add to the squad then surely a more realistic and pragmatic approach needs to be adopted, at least until safety from relegation is assured each year. Nobody wants to see a return to full Royball with 11 men behind the ball all game, even when at home to the bottom club. But then trying to play like Barcelona at their peak when you have players constantly mis-placing passes and losing possession while trying to walk the ball into the net is also not feasible, especially attempting to do so against the top teams. But the big question is does PV have that amount of tactical flexibility in his repertoire and how long is he given before the panic button is pressed and yet another short-term ‘firefighter’ manager is brought in to save the day and the club is back to square one yet again?

He's a fantasist in the sense that he believes the type of football he played and players he played with at Arsenal under Wenger (Henry, Bergkamp, Cole, Ljungberg etc) and the French national side can be recreated at Palace with the likes of Eze, Schlupp, Ayew etc.
Clearly this is what he knows and can't be blamed for it, he's played with the very best, but failing to adjust his expectations and adopting a more pragmatic approach may well be his downfall.

In terms of relegation, at present with a 6 point 'Cushion' to the relegation places on the back of disappointing results and challenging games to follow there is of course concern and some unease.

Should that 'Cushion' be eroded to,for example 3 points in the next few games, and the results continue to be disappointing it really will be 'Squeaky bum' time with the stark realisation that relegation was a probability rather than a possibility.

Changes of managers at Leeds and Everton could well give them that 'Bounce' at a time when our results continue to be unsatisfactory.

Ideally yes. But to reach the level required you need to ram home one tactic for each player so their acutely honed muscle memory gets them through. Deviations from that mean more flexibility but the quality falls below that required at elite sport level.

American football has a solution. A cast of thousands and effectively different specialist team for each scenario within the same game. Football does not have that luxury.

Yet.

He only bought one player, Jairo, and got Loftus-Cheek and Fosu-Mensah, on loan, played 3-5-2 for the first 3 games and then 4-3-3 in his last game, we had 57 shots in the 4 games, and more possession in all games, Except away to Liverpool.

He brought in Riedewald with the intention of either playing him in a back three or in midfield.

He played in over 90 games, in all competitions, for Ajax, before joining our club.
