We have passed three months - three months - without a PL-goal from open play.

8 PL-games beeing played.

I am aware there was a 6 week break due to the world cup, but that time was meant to get the team back on track, after which we played worse than ever, and did not manage one shot on goal in the first two games.

We may have a small chance againts Villa, but it is probable more likely we will get into April for another goal from open play - if at all this season.

We need some good set-pieces and top depending to reach say 35 points, which may even not be enough.

Others have said on a different thread what does it matter if a goal comes from open play or not as long as we score?
This would be fine as long we scored enough from set pieces to compensate for lack of goals from open play, but although we got two against Bournemouth via this method and another via Olise’s free kick v Man Utd, these sporadic successes are rare and cannot be relied on for the rest of the season.
In truth the goals v Bournemouth were due to their rank poor defending and Olise’s brilliant free kick v Man Utd may well prove to be a once in a season effort.
For me the key to staying up this season will be how we fare against teams in the bottom half who are struggling.
To win a few of these matches we need to increase our making and taking of chances.
As usual, Wilf becomes critical here because I can’t see enough goals coming from our midfield and our two strikers have been woefully out of form this season.
We are averaging less than a goal a game and may need to push this average up to nearer 2 goals a game to win more matches; we don’t keep that many clean sheets.

Our two strikers have NEVER shown any form to suggest they will score anything more than an occasional goal .

And we still need a striker

Schlupp up front now? May as well as he's not shot shy. Could work, maybe Ayew but he seems to always hit the keeper currently.
Edouard and Mateta here long enough to be judged, but still I'm unsure about them.

I assume you mean an average of 2 goals per game for the final 17 games may be needed? Even better would be to lift our average for the season to 2 goals per game, which would mean scoring 57 goals in those 17 games. We can but dream!

Mateta´s longest continual run of games is 19 with 5 goals
Edouard´s is 11 with 3 goals
My conclusion i have come to is, 27m and 144k a week, down the pan

I think a lot can be laid at the door of the least ground covered stat. This is a lazy team. To score from open play usually means getting up the pitch in numbers, and then back, and so on and so forth. We have rather too many hands on hips type merchants who are happy to stroll around with the side to side passing as requested by the manager, and consequently not particularly threatening the opposition or creating chances. Lazy.

I assume you mean home games as our 2nd game back was the 2-0 win at Bournemouth.

100%. Best finisher at the club.
