This thread seems to have wandered off the original familiar topic of the right blaming everything they don't like onto a hypothetical "left" influence, in this case attempts to tackle obesity, onto the NHS and now bullying in government.

Having just returned from a holiday in the Canaries, I can assure you that anyone who doesn't believe we have an obesity crisis is in denial. The comparison between the British holidaymakers and those from the rest of Europe, and the locals who served them all, is stark. I noticed exactly the same last year when I was in Spain, France and Italy.

On average, we look overweight and less fit, than our neighbours. They also appear more polite, more tolerant, better dressed and better educated than us. That applies at all levels of society. They appear to have more money and look generally happier and healthier.

This is a complete reversal to what I remember when I first started to visit 60 or more years ago.

You cannot blame the left for this as the rest of Europe is more socially democratic than us.

So instead of looking for mythical scapegoats I suggest those who complain take a long hard look at themselves, and their attitudes. The problems originate there!

If I thought Brexit was stupid in 2016 I am even more convinced today and seeing how other people in Europe are living only tends to confirm that.

Europeans aren't exactly svelte either.

So are you blaming obesity, poor education, fitness levels and politeness on Brexit?

Not directly, just on some of the underlying attitudes which led to it.

If we adopted the same attitudes as the majority of our neighbours then we would have seen the value of being in the Community, along with a more receptive vision of the benefits of social democracy, a healthy lifestyle and respect for others.

I am talking of the average, not the specific. I am not "svelte" but neither am I obese. For my age I remain active and eat and drink sensibly.

Over half is a pretty high average

it's not just your imagination. Going back to at least the Napoleonic Wars, people on mainland Europe regarded Brits as a bunch of drunken hooligans.

i think Juliette Barker mentioned it in her book 'Agincourt'.

If someone is obese according to the bmi charts it doesn’t mean they are unhealthy or a gimme to die young or be a burden on the state. A bit like cholesterol levels. A 4 might be good for one person and a 6 for another. Too much sway is put on these calculated numbers to try to perfect us. Ok a target is a good thing but it can cause a lot of stress and worry.

Most of Europe is a dump. What are you talking about?

The worst thing about Britain is how overcrowded it has become, and that too many undesirables have arrived. Immigration has totally changed the culture in this country.
We now spend our every waking moment concerning ourselves with all things related to it.
We have diversity and race issues rammed down our throats daily.

The absurd over representation of certain races on TV has reached farcical levels.
Our politics becoming increasingly affected by pandering to minorities of all kinds. Our institutions have totally lost the plot, bending over backwards to be woke.

None of this has anything to do with Brexit. Brexit will prevail and be advantageous in the longer term.
It certainly has nothing to do with obesity. Perhaps the fact that we have far more fast food outlets than anywhere else in Europe might be a clue to the actual causes.

Interestingly enough. The fattest people in the world come from Pacific islands.

This is now proof positive of a parody account.

I know it's an opinion but even so.....

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

We go to Kefalonia on holiday most years and I find the Greek girls there the most attractive of all of our holiday destinations. The Kefalonians refuse to allow any fast food restaurants on the island at all which probably has a lot to do with it

Another example of the mad world we are living in. Coukd/should this just not have been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter? Presumably the girl’s family wanted to press charges. I hope they are hanging their heads in shame
