Shouldn't your father have been off fighting the fascists?

He was. He was on board the Prince of Wales when it was sunk by the Japanese in 1941. He survived and eventually got back to the UK where he served for the rest of the war in the Admiralty.

My mother was quite pleased to have him home. I arrived as a result of their celebrations.

the Brits who fought WWII. fought to protect Britain. To prevent it being invaded and owned by hordes of foreign men. To prevent the annihilation of the old British nation. To prevent fanatics & bigots taking over.

many of those Brits are in graveyards in places like Arnhem. Now remind me again what they were fighting for ?

They were fighting fascism and the death of democracy. Which existed at home as well as in Germany. Whilst an invasion was feared it was the threat to our way of life that was the real concern.

Maybe some had such noble reasons. My old man was born poor, struggled through the depression then got sent away to fight for what other people owned.

My old man was born into a middle class family, whose dad walked out, went bankrupt and left my grandmother and 8 children with nothing, I never met my grandad. My dad was in the Royal Navy for 20 years and called up as a reservist. I doubt he had noble reasons either, he just did his duty.

Without being too holy about it whatever their reasons were we owe them an unpayable debt.

My father was in that theatre of war too, in Burma.

ah yes. WWII. Good against Evil.

you do know that Josef Stalin was on our side ?

and that the British Empire was enormous and not constructed by giving sweets to kids in India ?

can you define 'our way of life' ? cos i can look back at 400 years and find a ton of crimes & barbarism....

What is the point of this comment? Are you trying to suggest any kind of equivalence?

There can be no doubt that the Nazis and Hitler were pure evil.

Discussing British history and the Empire fills libraries. Some good, some bad.

Forming alliances, whilst holding your nose and having to decide which is the least bad option, is what has to be done when your country is threatened.

Anybody found anything on Sky or BBC news websites about the Dutch and Belgian farmer’s protests taking place over the past few days? No? They’re not happy at all…but it’s difficult to find anything on our news channels about it. Obviously doesn’t fit the narrative…

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

Rishi Sunak must ‘reset’ trading relationship with EU, say manufacturing chiefs.

Britain’s fractured relationship with the EU is costing the economy because suppliers have gone cold on doing business with the UK after Brexit, manufacturers have warned.

Easier said than done, and it is costing the UK dear.
