I think we sack him and we are equally likely to go down.

I'm not sure what manager we are going to get in, who is going to get much of a better tune out of the woefully inadequate squad we have. Not many wanted the job when we hired Vieira. I don't fancy Lampard, Gerrard, Marsch or Nathan Jones. And those that think Benitez, Bielsa or Tuchel or the likes will touch us are deluded. Hassentuttl may be the best bet, but I doubt he could turn around our fortunes with the players we have.

I hope SP is also asking himself some very serious questions about how he and the rest of the board have taken the risk and now is letting the manager take the blame for their ineffectiveness.

Hard to argue with much of that.

If he does go, the only hope can be that this hasn't all of a sudden come into the considerations of Parish et al and some research has been done in terms or suitability and availability. Very slim hope mind you.

With regards to board and therefore PV, you'd hope lessons would be learnt but hypothetically, if we do get someone new in, stay up and invest I would expect the same to play out. I think the intention is to find a manager who will do what Hodgson did, keep us up working with naff all but again in a PV mould, creating the illusion we have some sort of clever strategy for competing at the top without buying superstars and playing anachronistic football.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Some interesting news on alternatives here. Apparently looking at Carrick (no idea how he's been doing or where he is?) or Kompany who seems to be hot property currently.

I had hoped that we had finally turned a corner and were going to try and play possession based football rather and this would run all the way through the academy to the full team, so that young players could move effortlessly along the system. However, to do that you need an initial faith and an investment. It seems the board wants us to play better football whilst still thinking you can do it on a shoestring budget.

Both Allardyce and Roy got relegated with their last teams. I think that style of football has been found out and who wants to watch it anyway.

Kompany is more likely to get Premier League football by staying at Burnley. Carrick has done well in his short time at Middlesborough. He stands a decent chance of getting them promoted and I'm not sure a rookie manager is the person for a relegation dogfight. Long term managers they could be exceptional options.

But who is available now that is likely to make a difference this season? And that's the problem we face.

Yep.

I would caveat however that we did see that and hence the high hopes off the back of last season but as you've highlighted, unfortunately that looks very much to have been a false dawn and the reverting to type (lack of investment) is either through arrogance, ignorance or was always going to be the case all along. In any circumstance we've landed flat on our face and back where we were before.

So Parish is 'unimpressed with recent form' is he ?
Steve, can you look yourself in the mirror and be honest that you have given him enough tools to improve the team this year ??
That's a toughie !!

If he's honest with himself he'd have to say no.

I would like to ask Parish 'So Steve, are you surprised we are in a relegation dogfight when the board decided we could have a squad with two goalkeepers, including one injury prone one, one left back, two right backs who are well past there best, only two strikers (neither of whom are prolific) and try and go half a season with only 2 fit for purpose central midfielders?'

You have at least 2 players for each position. As stated before the fault rests fully with the Board.

All does have a 'May I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window?' feel to it.

Excellent post.
It is not rocket science but clearly it is for Mr P !
After 10 years at this level with all the incumbent riches our squad should be sorted and organised not the current ragtag affair with players like Ward, Luka, Riedewald, Ayew etc still here.
Also we should be at least remaining unbeaten against similar sized clubs and more recent arrivals at this level like Fulham, Brentford and the seaside scum (3 points and no wins in 5 this year).
But sadly, that what's likely to happen with everything done on the cheap.
(Cue 'the but Saint Steve saved us in 2010 brigade'). Yes, that's true but more recent events and those to come in impending weeks have shown and will show that he ain't up to taking this club on.

To be fair to SP, he has through a matter of good judgement and luck done well to keep us up this long.

However, as you have stated, we should after 10 years be in a much better situation than we are. Roy was left with a squad of ageing players that needed 75% replacing over the next couple of years. Unfortunately we had one good window and as you state left with players who should have been let go or are third choice because they can play in several positions in a worst case scenario.

I still believe that there must be some kind of impasse at Board
level to allow the squad to have so many holes in it.

As much as SP deserves so much credit for getting us promoted and staying there for so long, he and the rest of the board will deserve the criticism if we go down this season

I see there is another article about Vieira wanting to be a role model for black coaches. Follows on from one in a similar vein in The Athletic a couple of weeks ago. He's almost daring Palace to sack him and face the outrage
