What is it with all this cr*p people post about players 'lacking confidence'?

We had too much of this nonsense with Benteke - let's pl;ease not now start attributing it to the whole team...... or if it is then get a bl**dy psychologist in to sort them out!

Sorry, rant over!

Yes, and, looking further back, with Ade Akinbiyi and Gareth Taylor, both of whom would go on a scoring spree once they'd got their first goal - some hope!

To me last night's result and performance stemmed from very low confidence rather than tactics. We caught Brighton off guard by playing the high press and really should have taken the lead, but as soon as we went 1-0 down the players visibly seemed to sink deeper. Andersen made fewer long passes and the ones he did didn't find their man, Eze was awful and showed no belief in himself, Olise was too slow to make decisions, Mitchell's crosses were poor and Edouard looked lost.

Doucoure for all his hard work (and a couple of goal-saving challenges) needs to learn when to hold back from a challenge. I think he was saved by the fact Caicedo had just made a similar challenge without getting booked. Eze was the wrong player to replace him with as it gave Brighton more freedom in midfield and I have to say Mac Allister was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch. At least he won't be with Brighton next season (unless they break his legs). The one change I'll never understand is replacing Olise with Ayew when we're losing (unless he was injured). Ayew is a player who is much better defensively and at holding onto the ball, but that's it.

The only way confidence improves is with a win. Brighton were so bad at passing out from the back it was like they felt sorry for us. Arsenal will not be so generous and it is hard to see anything but a resounding defeat. While I've been more patient with Vieira than most in the end it is all about results and he must know his time is running out.

It goes without saying that Whitworth should be our MOTM for stepping up and being brave.

"Brighton were so bad at passing out from the back"??? I must have been at a different game to you! They only got it wrong once that i recall, but otherwise they passed us us death. We had some encouraging moments when our high press rattled them out of their stride but frankly they were playing the football...

Challenges:

1) We don't have a single attacker who is fast.

2) Only Wilf is a skilled enough dribbler to beat defenders 1 v 1. Ayew can draw fouls, but he seldom creates a shot. Eze can slip past defenders only in midfield and while on the run. Olise can step behind a defender, but he must then deliver the ball immediately or he'll be caught.

3) No member of the squad is above average at heading of the ball. Most are below the Prem standard.

Unless Vieira & staff can drill some wonderfully creative or intricate patterns of movement into the squad, goals will mostly derive from mistakes and second chances afforded us by the opposition.

Why do we just pass free kicks along the back line? We win some of the most fouls in the league yet do nothing with our free kicks. When you're not scoring would you not be better off to get the big guys in the box and launch it in.
In fairness, was the same with Roy too, however, we were scoring some from open play then.

Watch the game back and they repeatedly gave the ball away under pressure. Ahamada and Edouard both failed to capitalise on chances this created, but we also won back possession numerous times when we applied the press on the edge of their area.

Saw Tony Bloom had a winner at Cheltenham. I presume he's an ex jockey from his stature.

I know there is a a lot of negativity, but I'll put my tin hat on try to be a bit more optimistic.

We had some shots! And if not for some wasteful finishing we might have scored a goal or 2.

Vieira's tactics worked very well early on. Whilst not revolutionary, it shows that the coaching set up know how to set up a team.

It was a very different shape without that ball than I've seen before. Wilf and Olise tucking right in to almost play as CM's, CD stuck on Mac Allister. Unless he went too far and then Anderson stepped out. It was instrumental in stopping them playing and us creating chances.

The goal was against the run of play and sometimes you have to hold your hands up. Sharp movement, perfectly timed run, great finish.

Unfortunately Doucoure went a bit mental and was incredibly lucky not to get sent off. We are then in a much trickier position, Luka doesn't have the legs to keep up with Mac Allister, and we have no Hughes. So he gambled with Eze. Who looked lost for most of the 2nd half. Mac Allister started to get more ball and dominate.

We had a decent flurry late on, Eze starting to find his grove, Ahamada looking spritely. JPM with a nice interchange.

Although it feels it, I don't think we are a million miles off. And think we lack 2 things:

Bravery with the ball - too often we pass back, because its no risk, when there is a completely makable pass inside/forward. If there is any pressure at all, the ball always goes back. Clyne is a key culprit of this, sh1ts himself every time he has the ball. As a result we always allow teams to organise themselves.

Urgency in attack - In Olise, Zaha and Eze, we have players who are dead talented but love more touches than needed. Coupled with the inverted wingers means we are always checking back and holding the ball vs capitalising and getting a ball in. Zaha must have got to the by line about 5 times last night, and ever time he checked back and either lost the ball or passed back. Olise was the same.

Had a bit of banter with a Brighton fan, he was quite complimentary though stating the obvious, team to good to go down need a striker

They're human regardless of how much they get paid. Being high on confidence is massive in football; look what it has done to fairly average players like March for Brighton or Almiron at Newcastle. Rashford gets some belief back and suddenly everything he touches turns to gold. Alex Ferguson always maintained it was about momentum and wins breed confidence, but the opposite is also true, you only have to look at Chelsea for an obvious example of that.

Absolutely. To say confidence has no impact on a player's performance is laughable. I'd venture to say it's almost more important than actual ability. There's not that much different between Rashford and Sterling, for example. One's flying high right now...one's not.

Talk Sport pundit Alvin Martin, said “Palace have become easy for opposition to work out” and “if they had ‘a Harland’ up front, they’d have been two up after 20 mins”. Well which team wouldn’t! The obvious lack of quality in our supposed strikers must surely feed down to the rest of the team. The first 15 mins v Brighton showed that with the right approach and mindset, we can cause a real threat to the best teams but without a ‘proper’ striker, little will change. There just seems to be a general malady throughout the team, which, combined with PV’s apparent reluctance to try something different, is dragging us down. Why not play Hughes or Mac in midfield or even Schlupp up front...can he be any worse?

Where Danny Butterfield when we need him?

As to relegation, it looks a distinct possibility right now, but thankfully there are at least 3 candidates who should ‘save’ us

Been banging this drum for years. Schlupp looks like the best finisher at the club to me.
