Yet, but some books have been removed from education establishments and replaced with a ‘modern’ version; you know so as not to upset the lazy self righteous never wrong little darlings !

You do realise how often the curriculum changes don't you? Perfectly serviceable books routinely get dumped and have done for many years. It's nothing new. Whether you, or I agree, with the reasons for each change is another matter. Some we will, some we won't, but we aren't responsible for taking the decisions. Just remember that in the internet age kids are able to access "information" at will. Much of which is inaccurate and a lot of which we would never have seen. Schools need to counter that and be ready to answer questions. Comparing today to other schooldays makes no sense at all.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

It is, alongside many other similar things, putting a modern interpretation on historical events, the better to prepare for our future. No-one is suggesting that in its own context at the time it was wrong. Only that, with the benefit of hindsight, some people would ask questions. Dickens, being the social reformer he was, could easily have given one of his characters the licence to ask such such questions. When adapting a book for the screen this is what writers do. They challenge perceptions and make people think. It's not the BBC doing anything. It's a writer interpreting a book. I expect he is pleased with the controversy as it means people are taking notice. Yes, I criticise the Mail because it looks for things like this to dangle in front of their readership. They like to wind people up, rather than actually report events.
