If you are going to try something completely different then I would do this and play wing backs who can actually get up the pitch. Our current fullbacks have no chance playing alongside a back three.

Guaita

Richards, Anderson, Guehi

Ayew, Doucoure, Eze, Lokonga, Schlupp

Olise, Zaha

You can swap Hughes or Ahamada into this lineup if you wish. I think Jimmy Mc is finished. Adaramola looked like an attacking left back in his few cameo appearances so maybe he would work as a wingback.

If I'm seeing this right, you'd play Ayew and Schlupp as wingback/wing hybrids? I like it, even if it fits a little funny. I just wonder if Ayew has the motor to bring it up AND run it back as consistently as we get run along the wings.

That said, I think you can deploy Ayew and Schlupp as "Swiss Army Knife" type subs and play them out wide or centrally. I have been partial to trying Ayew as more of an 8, considering his strengths (carrying the ball, drawing fouls) would help maintain possession better than him trying to play an advanced position would. Of course, that's just a thought. Feel free to shred it up.

It probably hasn't escaped your notice but our strikers aren't very good at scoring.

Odsonne Edouard has 3 goals and 2 assists in 1278 Premier League minutes this season, or a goal contribution every 426 minutes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has one goal and no assists in 686 minutes.

It's put us in the situation where we, alongside Wolves and Everton, are the joint lowest scorers in the Premier League.

Is it time to basically give up on this pair finding some goalscoring form and try to find a system that works without them?

My theory is that we should start playing something like the following...

Guaita

Richards - Guehi - Andersen

Clyne --------------------------------- Mitchell

Lokonga - Doucoure

Olise - Eze - Zaha

... with the fullbacks giving us some width and the three front players rotating the false nine role. Kind of similar to what Man City had to do prior to Haaland arriving, except we'd obviously be a very low rent, bottom half version.

Zaha has never been prolific at assisting and, although I think Olise has a good delivery on him, when he does put it in the strikers are so woefully out of form that they can't convert anyway.

Feel like rather than trying to service ineffective forwards, these three players, who have 12 of our 22 goals between them, would be better served running at defences and having a go themselves.

No point playing the 2 Full backs at WB as neither can perform the role. It will be like playing 5 at the back.

Under Roy we often played 4-4-2 without a recognised forward and this included the 5-0 win v Leicester.

So we could play Zaha and either Olise or Eze at the head and maybe Jeff and Ayew on the outside of the 4 in midfield.
Pretty sure Jimmy Mac played on the right hand side under Roy.

The last 2 games where Edouard has played although he nor our attack has been brilliant it has at least led to a better quality of chances created (albeit we messed most of them up). Before Edouard started we literally were creating nothing. 0 shots on target for 3 games running. He at least makes the occasional run in behind which stretches the defence. When Wilf plays up top the build up is so painfully slow that by the time we're in the final 3rd it's so congested and our players can barely pass a ball 10meters.

I'd 100% stick with Edouard in the hope he finally manages to puts a chance baway rather than play without a striker and literally not create a thing.

I'd use time between now and the Leicester game to get the players playing 4-4-2 with the instruction that the ball goes wide and Mateta and Eduoard to make their runs expecting a cross to come in.
No beat the man, turn back, pass back stuff thanks Wilf, beat the man and put the cross in. Test their defence early doors. We are at home and they shouldn't be allowed to settle.

Yes that is what I’m suggesting. The defensive duties of wing backs are not as onerous as full backs playing in a back four. Schlupp has played all positions down the left and Ayew everywhere down the right apart from right back but he does put in a shift, so I reckon they could take on these roles. That means that when we attack we do with three plus the attacking midfielder and when we defend we do so with 5.

The downside is I’ve always thought wing backs need to be the fittest in the team and I’m not sure those two are. The plus side is they are far better going forward than our current full backs. It’s only an idea, but we are struggling for a system that gets more than one or two in the opposition box.

I agree, only problem I see is that playing more attack minded as we did yesterday resulted in 4 goals against us. Not so bad against Brighton but they tend to be more cautious going forward than most? Think all we need is two central midfielders, namely Doucoure and Lakonga (Hughes as backup) and Andersen being fit again. Personally I prefer Ayew on the right as he will support Ward or Clyne which Olise doesn’t.

I can see merits of a 442 and if Roy comes back we may see a version of this.
It could mean Ayew and Schlupp in the wide midfield positions though which many wouldn’t like with the the possible exclusion of Eze and Olise who may be used as options from the bench.
The two central midfielders would be a selection from Doucoure, Lokonga, Hughes, McArthur and Luka with Ahamada from the bench.
The two up front would be Zaha and Edouard/Mateta with Ayew an option as he had a decent season up front in the past under Roy.
This probably sounds ultra conservative but if Roy joins his first objective will be not to lose to our relegation rivals in forthcoming fixtures.
He would put solidity at the forefront of our objectives which could make it difficult for inclusion of Eze and Olise in the near term.
A draw keeps the status quo whereas a defeat could be a disaster.
I’m not necessarily advocating this, but trying to guess what Roy would do if he joins.

The obvious answer is would we notice if Edouard or Mateta weren't playing? May as well start with ten men.

An obvious enough alternative:
Schlupp false 9, with either Ayew in front or Eze behind - depending on opposition.
Transfer list Edouard and Mateta now. Not that I foresee any interest.

Olise needs to bulk up and someone needs to bust a gut to get in the area when Zaha or Olise are on the ball. But that is honestly schoolboy stuff. We still don't do it.

I have a feeling Olise is off with Zaha in the summer. Textor's French side. Just a feeling. Mainly informed by how uncommitted he looks.
