Fully agree ... everyone loved PV but the stats don't lie, worse team in the Prem for running, tactics never changed under PV, and quite naive when it came to reading the game and making changes to the shape etc when the opposition had us figured and never dealt with overloads on our dodgy full backs. At least Roy, Ray and Paddy will bring some structure, energy and determination back. Our old DNA was about being the underdog and never giving up -= something that got lost in the PV translation.

Did they?

We had a brief spell of good football mainly down to having Connor Gallagher who could press and close down, but beyond that we had far too many last minute defeats, no clue in front of goal , a poor work rate, too much loyalty to certain players and some ridiculous substitutions.

All the pundits praising Vieira obviously didn't watch more than the occasional highlights of our games. He attracted a few good players to the club but then failed to progress them.

All in all, a failure, as he has been at his other jobs.

I think as a person as opposed to a manager.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

The one player who could benefit from this is Mitchell. He has not been great of late and the one thing R&R do is coach defenders on where they need to be and what they need to do. A change of manager may also help Eze rediscover some form.

There's no point dwelling on the negatives, so I'm now scratching around for positives. Despite what people think, I don't imagine Luka will feature any more prominently as anyone can see he's done at this level. I like the guy but he's well off the pace. What we probably will see is three defensive midfielders, Olise will be coached to defend more and we'll probably see Andersen being encouraged to hit more direct balls to the wings rather than passing around at the back. In his last stint Roy openly spoke about creating clearer opportunities rather than more opportunities, seemingly doing this by absorbing the opposition's attacks and hitting them on the counter. His record was also fairly good in six-pointer games, albeit frustratingly being risk averse at times. His tactics never seemed overly complicated and players seemed to know what they were doing, even if at times that made us predictable. I always got the feeling he got nine players being solid and dependable so that one or two players could try and steal the goals.

I'm going to forget about PV and Parish until the end of the season now and just get behind the new management team. The last thing we need is people dragging the mood down further. At the end of the season will be the time to get the knives out if necessary.

Good post.

I support the sentiments but equally I think a good point around Eze and Mitchell.

One criticism I have of our team recently is that it looked 'boyish' and if not at fault I struggled to see PV rectifying it. Hodgson, whilst perhaps not recognised for having a strong youth focus might well be the figure some of these lads need to instruct and guide them for a short period.

Very speculative I admit but am opting for that stance.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Ray is still a highly respected coach. He still travels the country teaching UEFA coaching courses. His ideas, methods and game plan strategies are being used by other top coaches.

He is with us for 10 games, will be highly respected by the Palace players..and quite honestly, will give the job his 100% commitment.

I think PV started to run out of ideas.

Really looking forward to hearing Ray ‘bellow’ from the side of the pitch against Leicester.

In my opinion PV had to go. However you watch your football, both the stats and the live experience were damning. Plus us as a fan base were in a weird malaise not angry enough to boo but too bored to cheer with lack of attacking action and the same out of form players being played each week often out of position ( again in my opinion) That’s not what you need in a relegation battle. Having said we’re the lowest spenders this season in the league, he lost a £40 million player in CG, awful run of fixtures and Parish has clearly not backed PV or this “next level” charade fully so this is massively on his head too.

Ray-
Whatever my thoughts on Roy. The appointment on Ray is definitely a master stroke (especially if it’s to be believed that coaching at the training ground was poor) . Which again to the eye holds up: poor running stats, terrible at set pieces for and against us, no real attacking patterns of play, terrible passing and decision making in final third, no real leadership on the pitch and a massive loss of confidence as soon as we concede.

I know a few pro players and one at palace particularly well and everyone says Lewington is a class act and amazing coach. He’s also got a son still playing so weirdly even being late 60s is actually quite in tune with the younger players of today . Anyone who watched palace on the box in lockdown could hear Ray coaching and motivating players from the side line. I think our younger lads like Eze, Olise and even Wilf to some extent need this. They’re a little milky shall we say. Plus Edouard and Mateta clearly need motivating to run about and press. PV and Roberts didn’t seem to do this, Roberts especially looked like a spare part on a match day cuddling his iPad. I think with Paddy and Ray supporting Roy this isn’t as crazy as it appears especially considering the 10 fixtures remaining.

They should be able to at least improve motivation of the players and crowd by all being palace through and through.. I also think they will improve the basics and probably keep a more consistent side. I think the chopping and changing up top hasn’t helped Edouard's confidence (albeit he has been a huge disappointment and needs to look in the mirror) but he does look a confidence player to me that PV couldn’t get going. I also now fancy us more away from home to nick a point here and there or hold onto a lead. In a final defence of Roy he never had Gueshi, Anderson, Dacoure, Olise, Lakonga or Edouard to work with in his last season either. He had a negative net spend also in his 4 years so he may not be quite as defensive as before we can live in hope! I’m not saying Roy will keep us up but I actually believe we have a slightly better chance in a 10 game mini- season with him than PV.

Up the Palace…..

Yes a great post, and thanks for saying what needed to be said. Fitness levels clearly have to go up substantially to help with sustaining the pressing game. So whoever is in charge of player fitness has a key role. It's now a lot clearer that both PV and even more so his background staff had to go. I'm now quite optimistic that performances will improve. We still don't have a dynamic box to box midfielder like the much missed Gallagher, but Lokonga and Decoure look pretty solid. . So we should be more difficult to beat, but still don't see where the goals are coming from. Roy and Ray have a great deal of work to do, but hopefully both performances and results should improve against teams which are also struggling in the bottom six

As long as Ward and Milo play we’ll get tonked by any team. Their lack of pace and nimbleness is now well know with other teams and Ward particularly is targeted down the flank. He presents and shuffles every time asking to get skinned. If Roy walks back into that trap we might as well all pack up.

The beatings will stop when morale improves.

I can't but help think that upon Roy's first training session, he'll spot Ward and it'll go something like this:
RH "Ah Wardy, still here I see. Any others left? Tekkers?"
JW - "Christian's gone gaffer. But there's still me, Luka, Jordan, Wilf, Jeff, Jairo, Tommo, Ebs, and Mac."
RH - "Excellent! Well you're all starters. I'll have at look at the other lads and we'll take it from there".

At Fulham they reached the UEFA final playing good football. You can only work with what you have got, last time here they didn’t have as many youngsters as they do now.

We also saw some half-decent football in the first two years of their stint with us when we had the likes of Cabaye, RLC (for one of them), Townsend (not too far over the hill) and peak Luka. Indeed, in their second season we scored the most goals ever in the Prem (mainly away from home unfortunately where we had no fewer than 9 wins).

With you 100% with this. Unfortunately, can't make the Leicester game but hoping for a noisy positive Palace crowd.
