(i thought there was a thread on this already, but can't find it)

China's new military manoeuvres are quite provocative and signal an intent.
What will the US and NATO do ?

"China's military has begun rehearsing the encirclement of Taiwan during three days of military drills.

Beijing - which views Taiwan as a breakaway province of China - called the operation a "stern warning" to the island's government.

The exercises began hours after President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a trip to the United States." (BBC website 8.4.23)

This is potentially more troubling than the Ukraine situation. China holds huge amounts of dollars which it could dump onto the market thereby crashing the US currency if the States opposes too strongly any military action by China. A shot doesn’t need to be fired. So, on the basis that China absorbs Taiwan into the mainland, the only real response could be sanctions but seeing as China is the manufacturing centre for the West, more harm could probably be done to ourselves.
Taiwan also is the major computer chip manufacturer for the planet, so there is no good news for us in this scenario.

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

Russian power-play with oil and gas has badly hit the West when we tried to protest against the Ukraine invasion. China could soon cripple the West with product sanctions if we try to stop anything with Taiwan. The Russian/China alliance is the new UN security and NATO.

it's our own fault. We gave them the motivation to dislike us. Planting our flags all over their borders.

China has been preparing since 1947.

I don't like seeing Taiwan compared to Ukraine, totally different situation.

Sending an impotent British aircraft carrier ( the one with no planes ) through the Taiwan Straits is pointless and risible.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

I think we have done a bit more than 'tried to protest' don't you?

Creating a Russian/China alliance has to be just about the most stupid thing ever....almost as historically stupid and idealistically irresponsible as farming your manufacturing out to China in the first place and creating the very monster itself. I'm continually stunned at the level of reward that continually failing western elites receive.

If their lifestyle were based upon actual results for, like the guys working jobs at the bottom of society then I somewhat think the risks taken would be far more sensible. But none of them are really driven by the need to work for Joe Public.

Whatever their outcomes, their personal rewarded success is guaranteed, independent of just how badly they do.....there is zero accountability at the top and there is a good reason for that.

I read that the US and the Philippines are about to hold their biggest ever joint military exercises in the South China Sea and that the US have established 4 new bases in Luxon, the island closest to Taiwan, to enable to observe more closely.

The US is going through the motions expected of them but would be very unlikely to do too much should China ever feel the need to actually invade Taiwan, rather than just squeeze.

I don't believe this is at all similar to Ukraine. China is not ruled by a Putin, desperate to re-establish a Russian Empire. They already possess the soft power in the region, and it's not in their own interests to move to the hard power of war.

Time is on the side of the Chinese. Why risk upsetting their own economy when patience will deliver the result anyway?

We are having to pay for the rule of irresponsible idiots.

This was all said long ago and some people just can't accept that their judgements don't align with observable reality.

No more than I would buy you a beer and discuss politics with you.

I would accept that they are just as big a world power in the east as the USA has been in the west.
