I get why the Starmerites on here are trying to present this all as some evil Tory skulduggery but the 'Chief of Staff' position in either of the main two political parties is one of the most powerful, non-elected, political posts to hold in the UK. The fact somebody who sat in on Cabinet-level discussions, in the role of a supposedly impartial Civil Servant, of the Government of the day and then swans off to be the CoS for the official opposition absolutely stinks. It really does. Goes beyond the usual political shenanigans of the day on so many levels. It is just wrong. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Likely she will go from working for one Government to the next. She may not work in between, depending upon the Acoba inquiry. The Labour party wants her for her organisational and management ability not to be a politician.

C of S is still quite a new position and has been held by civil servants before. For example under Gordon Brown he appointed a civil servant to the position without any media comment (Jeremy Heywood). When Cameron took over Heywood merely went back to a role within the civil service, again without any media scrutiny. The fact that this has come up this week, on the eve of local elections is the issue and now it appears it is a non story. I'm amazed that some people are so outraged at this yet seem ok with say a Russian, and son of a KGB member, gets a place in the House of Lords.

What government business are you talking about M, Partygate? This is a silly episode and she should be able to work for who she pleases. The backdrop to this, of Chief Civil Servant Simon Case falling over himself to placate tory ministers by blocking is not how a civil servant should behave. For the government it has the most obvious benefit, that they can deflect blame from the serial incompetence of tory ministers onto others.

But Starmer handed them that gift on a plate. That is the point. Now whilst I accept that we are all guilty of being part of the wider hypocrisy in terms of having the blinkers on when it comes to our side of the divide (and as things stand I suspect I despise the Tories as much as you at the moment) if this had happened the other way around would you be just dismissing it as nothing more than some kind of distraction technique? If a senior civil servant, operating at the level Susan Gray has, resigned then announced she was going to the Chief of Staff to a Conservative Opposition leader in the run-up to a General Election you would be so flippant about it? Seriously?
