Seriously, though, what does she aim to achieve as Labour councillor that (say) the previous incumbent didn't achieve? Do you know? Does she even know? Our local councilors in Beckenham do a great impression of the invisible man/woman/it. As for the other parties whenever they campaign they are obsessed with attacking the government not saying how they would improve local services. Is it too much to ask to actually have local candidates who actually care about local services and can be seen out and about in your area. In Frome Somerset the local council was run by independents (not sure if it still is). This has to be the way forward. Sure the Tory government is lousy but what has that to do with the bins. Bromley council is Tory and as far as I can see well run unlike Croydon. If the other parties want me to vote for them rather than telling me that Sunak is useless they need to explain where Bromley council is failing and what they will do about it. Guess what I hope they will be! Who, of the two major parties will be willing to agree to such terms? If neither would that cause splits so that a government can be formed by a grand coalition? All speculation I know but PR and reentry into the EU are appearing on the horizon. You keep banging on about Brexit, but if the terms of reentry included, amongst others, adopting the Euro do you think most people would vote for it??

The Conservatives in my area made a big thing about filling potholes which are many and huge around the town but as it was already Conservative controlled and they hadn't done anything about filling them in I didn't vote at all and the Conservatives lost their overall majority. Ha bloody ha

Local issues do have some impact, potholes being one for sure. How could Croydon residents vote to retain any of the imbeciles that bankrupted the council in the next election, but I suspect they will. No doubt a terrible night for the Tories but not a general election. The Lib Dems are like herpes, every now and again they flare up in certain areas, irritate for a while then fade away. I would agree with those that opine Labour voters who voted for specific Brexit parties previously have likely gone back to Labour in some numbers. Edited by HKOwen (06 May 2023 8.57am)

Did it slag off the Tories, in an area where the Tory representation on the council was minimal in any case? Did it slag off the Greens, who previously had the same number of seats as Labour? Did it say that Labour would run local services better than the previous coalition had done? You mentioned potholes as the big issue in your area. In my area, there was lots of anger about potholes too, which was interesting given that the district council up for election has nothing whatsoever to do with the roads, which are the responsibility of the county council! Which level of council runs the roads in your area (given that it won't be a county council, as they weren't up for election)?
