I was in conversation with a fellow supporter who attended the game and he never made any derogatory comments about the referee.

Josh Smith was refereeing his first PL game, the referee originally allocated was Andy Madley.Josh Smith was due to referee the Barnsley v Bolton game on Friday but he was deallocated owing to his assignment to the game yesterday and Barnsley v Bolton was refereed by Michael Salisbury.

I hope you enjoyed a good night out with Mrs Willo after the match? We both got our match predictions wrong, I'm glad to say

A patchy performance with some good passages of play , in particular in the latter stages where we probably could have scored a winner.
Edouard took his goal well, but shows no signs of being the answer to our central striker needs.
There are too many shortcomings in his game which the very occasional goal cannot mask.
Hughes continues to impress, but the downside of the absence of Schlupp and Zaha yesterday seemed to be the compromising of Eze’s position with him often drifting to the left resulting in fewer opportunities to link up with Olise.
When Eze did move closer to Olise in the last few minutes he created a gild edged chance for Olise which Olise curled wide of the post.
I just wish sometimes that Olise would concentrate on hitting the target instead of looking for the perfect curling shot nestling inside the far post.
One final point - we need to retain Guehi.
The partnership with Anderson is excellent and gives us a platform to play.
Richards has looked decent as a deputy but is injury prone and it would seem foolhardy to disrupt the Anderson / Guehi partnership which has served us so well.
The only slight weakness I can detect is the occasional lapse on defending set pieces , but this a team responsibility and should be area than be worked upon.

He can’t seem to kick and run. Maybe Scottish defenders arnt as quick !

There’s no maybe about it, over the years I’ve noticed players being released by our lower league clubs end up appearing for the likes of Motherwell, Ross County, St Johnstone, Livingston etc in the Scottish top flight, no wonder Ed scored a hat full of goals for Celtic, I think I would’ve hit double figures and I’m fat and old

With our lack of marking it matters little where he took it from.

I agree with all that - poor defending against the free kick. I asked the question because I hoped to learn what the rules might be. I am pretty sure I have seen refs insist corner kicks be re-taken if the ball was deemed to be in the wrong place; can the ref do that for free kicks in relation to the marks the ref has made?

You would think so, but this has been a problem for a while and surely there are enough hours in the week to fix this? It’s not like we’ve had any cup distractions? Or is it the personnel that can’t work out how to man or zone mark when they need to

The ref actually put the mark in the wrong place, if you watched. It was taken from where the foul occurred.

The opposition see it as a weakness and presumably work on it all week before playing us.

Their corner routine for the goal was impressive, no one moved, except Mitrovic, who snuck along behind the line completely unmarked.

We had deployed zonal marking and nobody in the zone where he made contact with the ball made any effort to head the ball clear.
Statuesque.

There’s no doubt we look more vulnerable at set pieces than when we had Dann, Delaney, Tomkins, Cahill and Benteke who were all physical players adept at competing in the air.
However, the players we have now do compensate in other areas so one can’t be too greedy.
It’s still an area that needs improvement though
You don’t want to dominate games and lose points on set pieces.

That was pretty awful defending, back to basics I think.

Our GD -9 is quite good actually.
