I was interested - but not surprised - to read in The Observer that on Saturday we had the second-highest share of the ball we've had in a Premiership game all season. The article also said that the four matches in which we've had most possession this season all resulted in defeats. At least we won't have that problem next Saturday.

Possession, on its own, is an almost meaningless statistic and I don't know why so much is made of it. It's what you do with it once you have it that matters, measured more accurately by things like key passes, shots etc. Arsenal had 78% possession and Liverpool had something similar when we played them which didn't exactly work out well. All boils down to what we've been missing since we've been back in the premiership and none of our managers have addressed. A quality number 10 who can open up defences through the middle. Teams come to SP, stop our wingers and we have to rely on free kicks and corners to win games.

When we have potentials to fill this role they are not encouraged (think Garvan, Bannan, Williams and now Lee) Little comes through the middle (hence the demise of Murray and Gayle) so the opposition only need to put 3 on to Zaha to make him go round in circles and fall over leaving our centre forward isolated with little amunition.

Edited by Cucking Funt (01 May 2017 12.47pm) I think the point the OP was highlighting is that we don't know what to do with the ball when we have too much of it. We are infact pretty impotent unless we are counter attacking hence why we saw victories against chelsea, liverpool and arsenal with much less of the ball.

I think if you look at the names you've mentioned and where they have ended up post Palace (barring Lee ofcourse) then you have answer as to why it's sidelined. Finding a top quality creative midfielder is a challenge, and so far we've quite rightly not felt comfortable throwing our lightweight alternatives into the mix.

One thing that is supposed to happen when you have a good percentage of possession is the opposition tire out earlier as you are passing to each other whilst the other team are chasing the ball. This surely doesn't happen if you are passing to each in your third but if you pass more forward from the other teams half. So it counts where you have the possession for tiring out the opposition.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |

You are quite right. Effective holding mid-fielders are like gold dust and we have not had any for many years. I can't help feeling that if we had employed a continental manager this ongoing problem would have been addressed.
