was there mate, as a season ticket holder, Swindlehurst spinning on a sixpence to blast one into the roof of the net, and that silly cow with the bell a few rows down from me in the main stand - just to spoil your enjoyment we won 2-0, and Dave Bennet was good for City, starred in Coventry's cup win in 87. Big Mal was City manager of course (his second and rsther disastrous spell).

Was that the match Big Mal returned as Man City manager having signed some teenager (cant remember his name) who had never played for the 1st team from Palace for a fortune

also 1.4m squandered on Steve Daly, and 1m on Kevin Reeves, and they'd be bad value even at today's prices.

I enjoyed that. I remember all those players-a great team. Of course the game has moved on and the players are so much fitter now and play at a much faster pace, but I do miss proper tackling and the absence of diving, evident throughout that game.

and the chat after the game - 'the Liverpool of the south', 'we should finish top four' - five years later we were losing at home 5-0 to Wimbledon with their fans singing 'team of the eighties'. With the right stewardship we might have proved all the sleeping giant talk wasn't just talk - I fear the club's ambition has shrunk since then - I hope to see 35,000 crowds back at Selhurst, don't think I'll ever see 40,000 + again but we used to get those crowds regularly for big games and derbies back then, even when we were in the second and third divisions (40k at home to Spurs '77 43k at home to Liverpool the same year). Stonewall pen btw.
