It baffles me how we haven’t gone for a 3ATB and instead stuck with TM (who is the poster boy for one-footedness) and Clyne/Ward (who cannot progress the ball and always turns back and are not that capable defensive-wise except Ward being sort of OK when it comes to aerial duels). Going forward the ball either ends up being nicked due to poor forward passes, goes out to throw-ins or lofted towards our forwards that cannot win an aerial duel to save their life (particularly JP who really has no excuse with his build). It hurts me to say that we actually miss Benteke. Richards should come in in the right cb-spot with and Eze needs to come in in the midfield in a position that allows him to retrieve the ball low in the field to drive forward facing the opposition. Despite poor form riddled with mistakes, Eze cannot be benched when others clearly cannot get the ball into the final third.

Think Vieira's obsession with the JJJ players (Schlupp, Ayew and Mateta) will lead to relegation.

Eze was woeful when he came on yesterday, as he too often is. How does pushing Mitchell and Clyne/Ward further up as wing backs help with their distribution, which I agree is shocking. Surely that's puts even more responsibility on limited players to be creative? 3ATB also means less options in midfield, so given we can't find forward passes now, we certainly wouldn't with a man less in midfield. I thought we got it spot on tactically yesterday - we won the ball high up the pitch plenty, created good chances and limited them to a few - any sort of functioning attack and I think we get a result out of a very tough fixture. Major question marks about PV's loyalty to certain players and inability to motivate, but I think tactically we were pretty good yesterday.

Whilst I don't disagree, and I certianly don't think either of them are good enough, Edouard at least gets into positions where he can score a goal from time to time - Mateta doesn't even do that at the moment. If you play that game 3 times, I think Edouard probably scores a goal or two - I don't think that's true of Mateta.

We obviously cannot convert Ward or Clyne (nor TM) to wingbacks. Rather, we should bench them and put Olise/ayew/Schlupp as outer midfielders. Docoure as a holding midfielder, Ahamada besides him to progress the ball and Eze as a roaming attacking mid (as he should be) with Wilf and Edouard up top.

But they are not wingbacks and neither is Mitchell. We simply don't have wingbacks on the books. It's part of the summer clearout and overhauling of the squad. It's not Vieira's fault that the squad is limited in many ways. I don't think it's the Palace way to shoot the messenger. So personally I hope Parish gives him a chance to stay until the summer and oversee the necessary revamp of the squad.

PV did a revamp when he took over. Now time for the business to be done again. Freshening up is possible before the summer - from Academy

Last season we were 4-3-3, this season 4-2-3-1....we aren't set up for that formation these days. Our promotion season we were 4-2-3-1, but back then we'd have Murray up top, Zaha and Bolasie with Joniesta in the middle of the three... Jedinak and Ledley the two defensive mids. It was gold! I look at our team now and it doesn't fit into anything in particular... Certainly not 4-2-3-1....we'd have better wing play if we had true wingers and defensive midfielders who can actually take the game by the scruff of the neck... How good was Jedinak and Ledley back then.... I'm not sure our new guys are up to the challenge... Or they're more box-to-box which doesn't suit 4-2-3-1
Hopkin looks to curl one! |
