Might save the government £6m in admin, but unsurprisingly the unions prefer the system where they and their members have to do nothing instead. Edited by Stuk (06 Aug 2015 11.18am)

The unions are way too powerful again. Labour pretty much undid what Thatcher-love or hate her-put them in their place, but now we have all this s*** with the tube going on at the moment. Edited by fed up eagle (06 Aug 2015 11.15am)

Sadly you can't expect any better from these people. They've got it made, great pension, great benefits package, they're not going to vote to change what makes their life easy. It annoys me but then I think to myself 'can I blame them?' and the answer is no, not really. Us in the private sector are the ones that get s*** on and can't do a dam thing about it.

It's only being done as part of a tory war on unions. Save £6m? Small change isn't it? Attachment: FB_IMG_1438836524500.jpg (19.31Kb)

In the article a government spokesman said the unions needed to modernise and collect subs via direct debit. In other news, a government spokesman said all union ballots have to be carried out by postal vote, despite the unions saying they want to modernise and bring in electronic / Internet / text message voting. Double standards to further erode workers' rights.

Double standards to further erode workers' rights. They could send them a cheque, postal order, money transfer or walk there and pay their subs in cash. The government isn't asking for union ballots to be handed to them to process and then give the results, cost free, to the unions. That would be double standards. Postal votes keep the CWU members in work too

Tory Government do something with 'union' in title...Unions respond as though the world will end....nothing to see here and certainly no erosion of workers rights.

My union membership is by Direct Debit. I think its only in public sector work. Of course it shouldn't be the choice of the state or the unions, but the individual how they prefer to pay. In truth, both sides here are arguing the toss from politically biased agendas (Government because they're on an anti-union kick, unions because it could mean people finding it easier to cancel subscriptions).

Also much harder to defraud, than postal votes. We really should be moving towards increased use of technology in the democratic process. Its debatable whether we even need MP's as much, given the capacity for individuals to vote on most issues directly via electronic interfaces (why have MP's voting on a bill when the public themselves could actually vote?)
