every month I get three letters, one for each bank account, warning me of Important Changes to my bank account I get so many of these, and they are so dismally insignificant, that I've stopped reading them That's probably what they wanted, because they've probably announced that are charging me Ten grand a month in banking charges. Should there be a law against these spamming wars on customers?

Time for the big reveal. For a living I write computer code rules to generate mailings for a bank. So as these keep a roof over my head I'm not putting them in Room 101.

Cheers What I don't understand is why they keep pestering me They must know it irritates the bejeebers out of the customers and makes them want to leave?

I'd hate to say something sensible, but generally data comes from multiple sources and "the bank" isn't one guy monitoring hundreds of data streams to know that you are getting multiple letters. It's why sometimes you'll even get three letters from the same bank on the same day and you wonder why they weren't in the same envelope. The bank I work for does a lot to try to consolidate communications and minimise waste (and irritation) but there are a lot of things that can prevent it such as automated data triggers, multiple data sources and even data protection rules and FCA stipulations. I don't read anything they send me though!

Until you apply for a job, or passport, or something similar, and suddenly realise, you actually can't sufficiently prove your own existence to another person because whilst we've all been encouraged to go paperless initiatives in identity theft and money laundering detection mean you need all of this in a physical form, no more than three months old to prove you aren't a criminal and crumble under into existential crisis...

Well as someone who has built a career on providing printed output for bank customers, I'm not going to go mad defending paperless. I was anticipating an issue when applying for my mortgage, although given that it was a staff mortgage from the company I work for and bank with it wasn't so bad. You can go into the branch and get free copies (in theory) with most banks provided you are paperless. However, they often print them off in a format no different from what you could do at home. When I went to see a registrar to do that interview before you get married, I had a really rubbish version of a bank statement not even on headed paper but it got accepted. Really though, in this digital age, proving address with printed utility bills and bank statements is very dated. Advances ought to have been made a long time ago in this vein. It's similar to being told that you have to pay for something by cheque and you think "oh sh*t, do I even have a chequebook?"

worse than banks is Virgin Media. At my old flat I used to get an A4 envelope full of promotional crap every week and I wasn't even a customer. I lived there for four years and in that time I must have had more trees than Coombe Woods through my letterbox

In reality I know that it all just gets ditched in a returned mail unit and no human beings ever realise I am doing it.
