Dentists To Be Forced To Work For The NHS

I love the quote that says an NHS dentisat charges £28.50 for a check-up, polish and x-ray. When I had an NHS dentist (pre-Covid), they only did the x-ray & check up bit and then tried to get you to see an 'hygienist' for the scrape & polish at an additional cost of £36. (Private of course, and the hygienist a sub-contractor getting about £15 of that fee). They always looked quite shocked when I refused to anyone costing £144 per hour - and pointed out that my mechanic at the garage, a far more qualified and skilled person that the hygienist, only charged me £35. per hour.

I was forced to go private luckily I have found a great dentist. Still I think it only right that Dentists either work in the NHS or pay for their training.

So am I reading this correctly, a student who has to incur massive debts to train as a dentist will be forced by a government who are a bunch of free marketeers and who believe in small state and have spent years dismantling the NHS will now force people into a restrictive contract to work for less than market rates? Now I am someone who believes that essential dentistry should be easily accessible and free on the NHS,but I just cannot see a conservative government ever imposing something like this. Sound like a bit of popularist posturing. Far better to put the resources into paying dentists enough to make them want to work in the NHS.

However why should I pay for a Dentist to train. This idea should be expanded across the NHS. Each year a person works in the NHS it should reduce their student loans. For most people e.g. Nurses they go into the NHS anyway but if someone wants to work in the private sector that is their choice. I know loads of people who have earned qualifications for their job which they had to pay or their employer had to pay for.

just a couple of observations. a. you are happy to pay for treatment at your local dentist, yet see a line of freeloaders all seemingly getting their teeth done for free.

I called my dentist on Thursday as I'd chipped a tooth. I was told I'm no longer on the NHS list because I haven't been recently. I look after my teeth. I phoned around the local dentists and none were taking NHS patients, so now I'm forced to have a private appointment. I had to pay a £40 deposit for the priviledge. I have never trusted dentists. They are all about money. The prices for private care are outrageous and dentists manipulate diagnosis and treatment to make more money. Something needs to be done and now. How can people who aren't well off be expected to regularly visit a dentist or pay private costs? Scandelous.
