Well, I don’t suppose any female pundit would use the term.

From the look of most of them, they wouldn't risk handbags in case it either split their acrylic gel nails or punctured their their collagen enhanced lips...

...and as a female fan, I regularly use the expression for occasions like this one.

In the unlikely event of a similar incident in a women’s match, I doubt if a female pundit would describe it as ‘handbags’.

In reality, isn’t the expression a way of mocking women and thereby making them feel diminished and trivialised?

As a female fan I wouldn't use the expression myself. Having said that I don't find it particularly patronising - just a bit unimaginitive.

I think it's disappointing that, in order to mock a person, they should be compared to women or gay men.

Wrighty was my hero when I watched him in a Palace shirt from the Holmesdale end and he's just as much a hero to me now for his support for women's football.

I don't suppose he used the expression "handbags" as a slur towards women - it's just a common phrase that many people use without thinking.

If no malice was intended then I don't find it offensive or patronising.

I suppose one will be criticised for using the term "It has all gone T.ts up".

Darned modern era with all this woke/PC hogwash.Makes my blood boil.

I do think with all these things context has to be taken into account. If the person has a history of misogyny and they make what some consider a sexist comment then that is different to a throwaway comment with no malice intended. If they were suggesting women be subjugated with handbags then that's different. I think both sides are constantly looking for reasons to get upset, not realising how similar they are.

Boo Hoo someone said something I consider offensive

Boo Hoo someone got upset about someone saying something they found offensive and this offends me

Most of us are decent folk and we just need to learn to grow up a bit and realise all most of us really want is our dinner on the table when we get home from work and for the wife and kids to leave us alone while we watch the football

Digging into the deepest recesses of my memory, I think I'm right in saying that the word was originally used in the phrase "handbags at dawn" - as in the old phrase "pistols at dawn" (when duels were traditionally conducted). But with increasing usage it just became "handbags".

And don't forget that Maggie Thatcher, when mocking one of the "wets" in her government, was occasionally described as giving them a "handbagging" - only, I suppose, because she took a handbag everywhere, even into the Commons.
