A stranger to this side may wonder about the cruel sarcasm of some nick names used by the fans about some players. Doris comes to mind. Never a more loved or respected man than our Paul. Puts me in mind of 'Mary' Houseman. Any others?

Going back a few years, Peter Beardsley's nick name was 'Bungalow' 'cos there was nothing upstairs....a name I believe he shared with at least one other top flight pro.

Doris was also nicknamed "Fish", which if you ever saw him run then you'll know why.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

I have heard of him referred to as "Plank" because of the 'Wood' in his name ! And Sewell was "Shovel" !

Going well back in the day (about 1910) George Woodger was called "Lady" due to his twinkle-toed ball skills, according to my late Granddad who saw him playing at the Crystal Palace.

And then there was Bert Howe, who was always "Chopper" for obvious reasons as any opposing winger would testify.

Yes Sewell was known as Shovel and I think, Hoof. And young Kember was called Lino....spent lots of time on the floor, Then Ian Walsh was often refered to as Windmill, Forever waving his arms to attract a pass.

Johnny Byrne was known as "Budgie" !
I think that Peter Crouch was known as "Rodders" when he was at QPR !
Paul Scholes was "Archie", Albert Ferrer was "Chappie" at Chelsea and Lee Hendrie was "Bush" at A.Villa !
And Robbie Savage was nicknamed "Lily" at Leicester !

There's still nothing to beat "Sicknote" Darren Anderton.

From the Palace archives ....

Bert "chopper" Howe from the 1960s.

Goalkeeping legend Paul Hammond was known as "teflon" in some quarters.

I think I remember Cliff Jackson, again from the 1960s, being referred to as "Gladys"
