Thing is that they actually did better than they did in 2010, just not in Scotland. Their share of the vote is higher and their percentage increased. In terms of the UK they were only 6% off the Conservatives, despite taking a right royal bumming from the SNP. Outside of Jocklandia, they gained 22 seats over all. 232 Seats is a fairly respectable result, all told, in 1997 the Conservatives lost with only 165 to Labours 418. The big swing since then has been the demise of the Liberal Democrats, and the rise of the Green, UKIP and SNP.

They could split and have a completely separate Labour party for Scotland which could be left of centre to appeal to the more left wing voters in Scotland. The English Labour party could be more centrist to appeal to the voters in England and Wales. Obviously they would both be close allies but separate much like the Conservatives and the DUP or Labour and the SDLP.

I meant futile more in the sense that if Labour moves back towards the centre as urged by Mandelson et co then it may gain power but only as a tory-lite party.

I think they need maybe to look back more towards re-establishing their core roots and basis, they did remarkably well under Blair (admittedly against a Conservative party that was dead on its feet). Their problem, is how do they make up for the losses in Scotland. After that, the difference between the number of seats for a majority, is fairly minor. They'd be 20 or so seats off a Majority.
