Was going to post this on the Covid thread... but it's a discussion in its own right.

How many of you make sure to get some sunshine on your skin each day?

How many of you take Vitamin D supplements?

How many of our darker skinned Eagles are conscious of the increased importance for awareness on Vitamin D?

From the scientific literature:
"Low serum 25-OHD was associated with higher rate of COVID-19 infection compared to the control group. Higher rate of severe COVID-19 was observed in patients with low serum 25-OHD." [Link]
"Prescribing vitamin D supplementation to patients with COVID-19 infection seems to decrease the mortality rate, the severity of the disease, and serum levels of the inflammatory markers [for Covid]." [Link]
"According to our results, vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of COVID-19 infection and the likelihood of severe disease." [Link]
(Not just Covid...)
"Despite levels of 25(OH)D strongly varying with country, sex, and season, the association between 25(OH)D level and all-cause and cause-specific mortality was remarkably consistent." [Link]
"Vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of cancer death by 15%" [Link]

So...
Why aren't we all taking VitD supplements?
Why was it not one of the major things talked about
Lockdowns? Jumped on by politicians immediately... unintended (and intended) consequences that that brought.
Why not shout from the rooftops about a (VERY) low-cost treatment with virtually zero side effects (it's not a drug, it is literally made by our skin)?
Why are black/brown people not made fully aware (and reminded every 5 minutes!) that they are at much higher risk of VitD deficiency (since higher melanin means less VitD production).
Why are we not fixing VitD deficiency in the first place?

We should all be taking supplements in winter, darker skinned people more so. We should have all been taking VitD during Covid. We are probably all somewhat VitD deficient.

The reason winter is so important for supplementation is: the sun doesn't get high enough in the sky to give us sufficient UV to generate Vitamin D. It's kind of a sick joke from nature that anyone is this high latitude, considering the biological constaints to our health.

A friend of mine has a theory that we used to wear sheep's skin and would absorb the VitD through the winter months.

It's also a sick joke that any darker skinned people who are this far north are not aware of all of the above!!

Whenever I read stuff like this, I'm reassured by the fact that average UK life expectancy has increased over my lifetime from approx 68 to approx 82.

Years ago I started taking multivitamins and Cod Liver Oil daily. Firstly for general recovery after being seriously ill (lengthy hospital stay) but then secondly just as an additive for my general wellbeing.

My (hospital) doctor, whom still books me in for biannual appointments as a precaution (cancer/tumours etc), often remarks at how well my bloodwork is going, used to show real enthusiasm when I mentioned taking both and continually asks me if I 'still am' responding gleefully to confirmation of this.

Seems like a pretty unspectacular habit to have but I still am surprised this would be considered as some sort of genius move by medical staff. Can get both in most supermarkets if not a Boots pharmacy/Holland&Barrett type establishment.

Not sure if that's of any help.

Interesting! I know things have improved a lot in many ways - my immediate thought on this is this: are they 14 years of healthy, happy life, or are we staying a live longer just to be sick and take meds?

I would rather see a measurement of 'healthy, happy years lived', rather than a simple measurement of time alive. I'd trade 14 years of life for almost any amount of time of healthy life.

After lengthy sessions of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants I have an aversion to taking more pills than is medically necessary to keep me going.

However, Mrs POG is a great believer in vitamin supplements and she insists I take vitamin D because of it's perceived benefits. I also take, reluctantly, Turmeric because it is known to relieve the symptoms of Myeloma.

So, anerley, there may be some health benefits from taking a vitD supplement, but I would much prefer to run around in the fresh air rather more than I am physically able.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I take vit D supplements - the sun is in limited supply in Scotland. Also Wellman 50+. No idea if they do any good but Berocca tablets turn your pee into Lucozade.

The problem with Vitamin D, unlike nearly all other vitamins/minerals - we cannot get VitD from diet (in sufficient quantities). Really, we should be spending the majority of our time in summer in the sunshine and absorbing as much as possible. In the winter in the North, we just don't have the option and I am interested in ways that peoples in Europe and northern latitudes dealt with this (geometric) reality. As I said, sheep skin may have been a method in the past.

You're only a youngster as us oldies were given cod liver oil daily back in the day plus Malt Extract and Haliborange tablets to cover everything else
