If we were to substitute the subject matter of GT's doc to say, racism and the response garnered on here from a select few drew nasty responses I'd wager the offenders would hounded out post haste. Alongside this if us as fans made racist chants at opposition players and/or fans I'd think we'd play behind closed doors and face massive financial sanctions as a result.

So why should this level of abuse be acceptable/tolerable when it comes to the LGBT community? GT made this point in the doc and he's got every right to make it.

Sure he has the right to make it. Personally, I'm a fervent supporter of the marketplace of ideas and I've no problem with ideas I don't agree with being expressed.

I feel that your intent is an honourable one, however I don't support the mechanism. Racist chants against players wasn't stopped by bullying 'action'. It was vastly reduced by cultural and generational change over time. It was s vastly reduced by the increase in black and mixed race players in teams. It was vastly reduced by crowd self policing.

If someone is a genuine racist or is genuinely anti homosexual personally I'd rather debate the ideas than force them to be liars or silence them.

I take issue with the idea that not liking something....to 'discriminate' against something is wrong (with the exception of supporting violence) and should be banned.

You discriminate every day of your life. Did you date ugly girls or boys just as often as good looking ones or ones you liked? Did you prefer shapely girls/boys to fat ones? Did you date girls/boys with significantly lower or higher IQs from you?

Discrimination is everyday. So banning people from expressing discrimination is very definitely creating a 'safe space'.

Everyone should be protected from violence and the threat of violence. People should have some level of protection from lies and libel.....once we step out from this...we create dangerous ground in my view.

This said, I have the impression that you have honourable intent. I just differ on the mechanism.

Yes crowd policing and cultural change is what is needed.

Cultural change is happening hence this conversation.

And crowed policing I hope will now be more likely to take place due to the cultural change and these very conversations.

..... and here I shall throw in a commendation for the HF leading the way with songs and chants that don't include bad language or offensive material against any players or supporters (our own or away ), but simply support our players of whatever colour, orientation or religion. Which is just as it should be........

Bang on Becky

We used to sing those nasty anti-opposition songs and they have largely stopped. Nowadays if one starts up I feel really uncomfortable, we support our team we don't need to unsupport the opposition and its supporters. But of course put on maximum pressure during the game.

F*ck this topic is so boring, it should be moved to general talk for the plebs to discuss.
Parchmore was a c*ck. bubble, good poster.
what will be worse when we play Brighton ? Gay chants, pikey/rioter chants ?or violence ? I'd expect, but not condone . All of them.

It would be nice.

It's tricky, the tribalism of football can bring out t he worst in you.

I remember I was at Selhurst, a few years back (2011), when we took on Reading in the Championship. In the dying minutes of the game they had a corner and it was 0-0....I always seem to go to draws..... I was with my young nephew behind Speroni's goal. Reading scored from their corner and their fans started celebrating like crazy as you'd expect. Then seconds later the ref blew his whistle and disallowed it....Well, I and loads from behind the goal rose seemingly as one and jeered them...I think I was giving them the finger and god knows what I said.

It wasn't good, nor a good example, and to be honest I surprised myself.

I'm not excusing those wallies who call out horrible and unnecessary stuff. We all know it happens. But football pushes buttons in the high stress moments.

I have not commented on the thread since Thursday, as you can see from my history that I do not comment on many threats. I am more interested in viewing transfer news and general news for my club. My main hope it we progress in the league.

But since I saw the documentary I felt I wanted as many CPFC fans to see it for its overall message. I also wanted any abusive messages removed.

As Brighton are in the premier league next season, there will be increased spotlight against homophobic chants, and I do not want my club to be the centre of this and if we are having this discussion before the start of the season to change views, it is all the better.

I am pleased that most posts are against homophobic messages on all sites, and I feel that this is clear the majority CPFC fans.

But there are some posts that do concern me regarding that this is still banter and I would like to mention the impact of indirect discrimination.

As background, the first FA cup final I saw on TV at the age of 11 was CPFC vs MUFC, and this is how I became a CPFC supporter. (My father & mother did not have not club, but my granddads were Arsenal and Leicester fans, but the 3-3 final meant I was for CPFC)
I became a season ticket holder in the 00-01 season, I knew I was gay, but out to no one. The season ticket holder next to me on several occasions shared homophobic views to players, (not towards me), which did upset me, I was 20 at the time and felt I could not renew my season ticket.

I have been to CPFC matches over the years, but my last match was the meeting at the AMEX in 2013 vs Brighton. The level for homophobic language was the highest I heard.

Away from CPFC. I have been physically attacked (which included verbal discrimination) in the street twice in Brighton 2001 and in 2009 (I live in Brighton) for being gay (because of holding hands with my partner on a Saturday night), by some groups of young men, I needed medical treatment and so did they and reported to the police. To be clear I am no way saying that this is CPFC fans or even football fans.

Considering the attacks and because what I heard in my season ticket year and at the AMEX, I did not renew my season ticket and I have not seen a match live since, even though the two are not linked. This is because I can be home and watch matches and not have the possibility of hearing something that will make be uncomfortable.

Indirect homophobia “banter” between straight men on a match day, does not affect them. But to the 5%-10% of the population, that are gay, this does have an impact, and does influence the decisions they make. Such as coming out as a player or going to matches.

I expect every gay man or women have heard the “banter” used directly towards them in a very personal way.

Everyone in life should consider, not what am I saying to the person I am talking to, but who is also hearing and seeing what I am saying, and the possible unknown impact on them.

What about plain looking girls or boys?....should we somehow police that? What about people with low intelligence, should we stop nasty comments that they get? Why should they get the s***ty factory job and you the better one...their nature isn't their fault....yet they have to put up with it don't they. What about ageism and how older people are treated? What about how conservatives in highly liberal institutions are treated? Should we stop negative comments that they get from other staff. What about headscarve wearers...What about dwarfs and their job prospects?

The whatabouty element is high. These are impossible demands upon society.

Good role models and time are the best ways to bring people together.

No special treatment for anybody. The law should be followed. If someone attacks you for being gay they are an arsehole.

If something unfair happens to you the law should protect you as it should protect everyone from unfairness.

And I guess that goes for autistic people like you Stirling

Clearly you struggle to put yourself in anyone else's mind-set.

lanepe1, good for you for sharing your story. Not pleasant that people pick on you for being you, something you can't help

I do think things are moving on quickly and I suspect you won't hear similar things on a regular match day. Brighton is a special case due to the accumulated hatred. If it makes the Brighton fans uncomfortable being associated with Gay people then you can bet some drongos will use that. Any line of attack I am afraid.

Just like used to be sung about people in Liverpool not having jobs. I really don't think some people consider the collateral damage but that appears - to me - to be improving.

But here's the thing - work with the rest of us on this and try not to get into attack-defend spirals. It's the only real way to keep making progress.

FFS. Can't you tell the difference between people that are innocently just being themselves in consensual relationships and people that abuse children.

Jeeze, maybe it simply isn't worth defending this site.
