A comfort to know that Roy has managed other clubs - and the England Team. Have to hope that he is in international mode, with a wish to see what every player can do. Please can he get all players to go all out on 1st April. Please could we have an Academy Striker on display from the start? Be a first for Roy. Who, I think, has never heard of the Academy.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

Fair play to him for taking it on. People with money tend to want more. He's not doing it as a favour. I'd frankly say the job is a bit of a pain in the arse. Where is there any evidence that this will work? In my opinion, and I'm pretty sure in the majority of opinions, we needed a motivator. Is Roy a motivator - he doesn't seem it. I don't see how this is anything other than a step backwards. We're almost at the stage where we'd be better off in the Championship. Fingers crossed, stay up, then buy what ten decent players in the summer. Yeah right, get real. It isn't a strategy, it's not even a tactic. It's not even ok for now.

Or maybe because he can't stay away and the lure of the easy £££ is just too much to resist? Edited by southnorwoodhill (21 Mar 2023 10.49am) This is sky sports video analysis of what Roy has to address. Most worrying is yards run per game, in which we are bottom. The fitness training under Vieira doesn't look like it was good enough.

There may be a whole raft of unemployed Managers out there, but were they willing to come to us? Why even would they, until we know whether we are staying up or going down. Why take on this sh*t show, when they can wait til the end of the season and make a considered decision.

Wasn't the lack of running and fitness also a criticism of Palace under Roy? I seem to remember it was. Anyway, let's not get too carried away about the distance covered thing as Man City, Arsenal, United and Brighton are all in the bottom seven teams for distance covered. It's what you do with the running, not how much you run.

I really don't think Roy will perform miracles or do anything much really but I have to say I will be ecstatic if we stay up. I won't even care about how worrying next season is, for a while at least.

Roy's first game is April 1st. How very appropriate. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. But who's the fool? Edited by southnorwoodhill (21 Mar 2023 11.55am)

A 65% win rate against the teams below us would say otherwise, as would draws against Liverpool, Newcastle, and Man Utd. What we have been since Christmas is hard to break down with very little threat up top. Sound familiar? Welcome Mr Hodgson. Ambrose pointed out a worrying stat that in the run in in Hodgson's final three seasons we played a combined 24 games, won 2, drew 2, lost 20. Either that means he doesn't have the energy for a full season, or his tactics aren't suited to when the stakes rise. I really hope it's the former, but I worry it's the latter. The one bright spot for me is that Paddy is assistant, not Lewington, and he seems to want a bit more blood & guts. Maybe he'll add some freshness to the R&R sandwich. Edited by taylors lovechild (21 Mar 2023 11.05am) But the flip side of that argument is that all the bottom teams bar Everton have signed players since we played them and are on better form plus the fact that just before and since the world cup we have already lost to Forest, Southampton (FA Cup).

Vieira wasn’t working, he had more money spent on his squad than any previous manager and was being tactically outthought by other managers after season one and seem lost as what to do. While I would agree to some extent this is true, what do you expect from a first-time PL manager who at least to some extent is learning on the job? What I'm saying is either don't hire managers who are unqualified in the first place or if you do hire them for whatever reason then expect to go through some rough periods in which you have to stand by them while they learn. Hiring an inexperienced manager and then failing to back him to gain the required experience merely adds insult to injury. I think Vieira got the job (after others had rejected it) because he was essentially the only candidate interviewed who wanted it, and pre-season was fast approaching at the time. Parish was getting desperate, and Vieira - a big name - gave him a solution. This speaks to a greater problem; that Parish now has a reputation in the game as someone you don't want to work for. That hurts Palace. Whatever you think of Allardyce and Pulis, they were credible managers who have influence and networks in the small community of football. The fact that they couldn't work for Parish is bound to have been noticed by others. The treatment of Vieira last week, whether right or wrong, will also have resonated in the football world. He's a beloved and respected person and whether we were right to break ties with him or not, it won't go down well (it already hasn't) in the wider football world. Roy has got the job now as much, I suspect, because he's one of the very few who's prepared to work with Parish as anything else. Our real problem may come in the summer, no matter which division we're in. I suspect very few credible managers are going to want the Palace job as long as Parish is there. Why would you want to work for a boss who the best of your peers have no respect for?

I don't disagree with the short term appointment, but hope Roy approaches the role with an open mind re the players.
