I understand that these things takes time blah blah blah and we dont want to just pay what people want blah blah blah but surely getting a striker in early is more important than saving a few million pound.

As far as I know the reason we haven't signed Benteke yet is nothing to do with agreeing a final fee with Liverpool, but if as some people are suggesting we are holding out to save a few million quid then that is surely a false economy.

If we had Benteke 4 or 5 weeks ago so he had had a proper pre-season and chance to gel with the team then he could well be the difference between 3 points in the first 3 games or 9 points. That's a 6 point difference and could be more. At the end of the season that 6 points could well be worth 3 or 4 million quid more in prize money, it could mean an extra game on the TV due to a higher position (equaling a bit more dosh) those 2 or 3 places higher could mean a slightly higher grade of talent willing to come to us in January or at the end of this coming season.

The fact that SP is a highly accomplished businessman leads me to believe that he will obviously know this already, so would not be looking to save a few million quid as he would know it makes no sense to do that if it means delaying a key player for over a month.

If playing hardball for a week saves you a few quid then fair enough as that would not impact your side that much, but delaying a key signing for 5 or 6 weeks and removing them completely from your pre-season to save 3 or 4 million quid is the work of an idiot.........we all know SP is not an idiot.

In other words: it's probably complicated!

As an aside, a theory on this thread of what ifs and maybes that is as good as any other is the Lukaku one. Chelsea have allegedly tabled a colossal bid for him. If he goes south, given Beneteke is already settled in the area and the fact that Everton are a quality established club, he may prefer the short stroll across Stanley Park rather than another major relocation?

A possible fly in that ointment is that Lukaku is nursing an injury that may keep him out of contention; and may put Chelsea off - for the time being at least.
