1) What's the best place to get 2 tickets for the match? See the reply above which mentions International membership 2) What is a good place to sit, or places to avoid? I'm older, so the less rowdy the better. More expensive seats are ok. Sounds like the Main stand is the place for you. The atmosphere is still good and you'll get a great view of the match and the colourful Holmesdale stand with our liveliest fans. 3) I'm staying at a hotel near Hyde Park. What's the best way to get to/from the match from there? Can I take a taxi? I rarely get to London, so not familiar at all with the city, or the area around Selhurst. Unless you are infirm or nervous I would use the tube/train as described above. You will see more of London's life sights and atmosphere and save a fortune! If you do need a cab use the Uber app on your cellphone (we call it mobile). Most of all..... ENJOY YOURSELVES! Edited by Hoof Hearted (17 Sep 2016 9.51am)

You guys are awesome, thanks for all the advice! I laughed at the Sebastian Coe reference. A couple follow-ups... I will check the availability of tickets in the Main Stand on the International site. If there aren't any decent seats left, do you have secondary or re-sale sites for tickets? We use stubhub.com in the US. I don't mind taking the tube & train, at least to get there. I'd rather not be packed in, so I would likely leave early. How long before the match do the trains to Selhurst start getting crowded? I do have Uber, so that's always an option too if I get lazy. What's a good place to eat lunch around the stadium? Cheers!

What's a good place to eat lunch around the stadium? Cheers! Short answer is no-where is great. However, if you're pissed up one of the takeaways usually suffices. I would genuinely advise eating before you leave the hotel and maybe having one or two pints before and after game - if you want the most authentic experience. Eat again when you get back to the hotel - don't buy the food or beer in the ground, unless you are not at all fussy. There is a half-decent Palace ale but it is nearly always sold out. I can't actually vouch for the food as I haven't eaten it in years, yet I somehow doubt it has improved greatly.

I would suggest going to the White Hart pub for lunch in Crystal Palace SE19. then getting a cab to Selhurst not far from there pub is nice and food not bad. Walk up from Gypsy hill or Crystal Palace mainline services.

Go to Crystal Palace (triangle) and go to The Market, the White Hart or the Alma. But this does mean getting a train to either Gypsy Hill or Crystal Palace (both are short, but steep uphill walks to the triangle) rather than Selhurst train station. Then order an Uber to the ground - or you could walk it's just shy of a mile

Just looked at a map in more detail... How about taking the underground as far as Brixton, then taking a cab/Uber from there?

The overground from Victoria to East Croydon is faster than the underground to Brixton and gets you much closer. In my humble opinion a far better experience and from East Croydon you can get a train back up one stop to Selhurst or Norwood Junction, or get a cab. Croydon is renowned for having a busy and successful branch of Nandos. Edited by Mapletree (17 Sep 2016 6.47pm)

Your hotel is almost on top of Victoria Station and the train will take you to Selhurst without changes for little cost in 20 mins......

John I know is late in the day but I have 1 ticket for Block J in the Holmesdale, if that helps. As a "long distance" supporter you can use it free of charge but please PM before 10:30am tomorrow. I would never, ever use a black taxi from central London to Croydon. You will get ripped off with a massive bill. Don't do it. Get the train from Victoria to Selhurst, that takes around 25mins, much quicket than a taxi and much, much cheaper, even if there are 3 or 4 of you. Edited by europalace (17 Sep 2016 8.29pm)

A black taxi from Hyde Park to the stadium will cost you the best part of GBP100 I'd say. Perhaps even slightly more than that. Up to you to decide if that appeals. Other taxis would be about half to 2/3 of that price. If those are too expensive, a nice halfway house for you might be to go from London Victoria to East Croydon and get a taxi from there. This would minimise walking. There are always loads of taxis waiting at East Croydon and the cost should be about GBP15 to Selhurst. I don't think loads of others would do this, so it shouldn't be crowded and would be simple. A train to East Croydon from Victoria will take about 15-20 minutes and a one day travel card (free tube, train, bus) will cost you and your wife about GBP10 each. Or just go by train to Norwood Junction and walk. A touch crowded, some away fans and a 10-20 minute walk to the stadium. You may find your return to the hotel more challenging. For that, I would recommemd walking to Norwood Junction from where you can get a train back up to central London. Hard to get collected by a taxi. A fit middle aged person could walk to Norwood junction in 10 minutes in clear roads. There will be thousands of people in your way and you can adjust this for your age and health/fitness.
