VPN is more for accessing sights when you are abroad. Some uk websites (Virgin Media) And gambling sites you cannot access when in certain countries. A VPN will bypass this. VPN is excellent for establishing secure communications between two separate systems and controlling who has access. To be honest, I never really thought about using VPN to get around national blocks.

Most banks wont allow vpn to access account. If you are using Windows based PC Tor offers some protection but not great deal as people are trying to make out it really needs to be running on Linux for proper security.

Yeah, with Tesco, it was the central system that was compromised. Jamie's suggestions are all sensible. A good password manager like LastPass with randomised password generation is good. Use two factor authentication where you can (requiring a mobile phone plus password to access certain sites).

Like has been said TOR and VPN ain't going to help you at your end more a decent firewall, AV, malwareware/adware scanner and your wits. If you get an EMAIL reporting to be from your bank scan over the sender address mostly all the scam ones will be along the lines of customer.services@yourbamk.com followed on by some random text and if you do open it don't click any links just go to your bank providers actual webpage and log in from there.

Really good suggestions guys - many thanks. Grumpymort - I am using Windows 7 on a laptop. I have often wondered about using Linux but as a technophobe am worried that I'll break my machine if I download another operatinng system on top. The good news is that my Tesco account (I have several accounts spread across a number of banks) has NOT been hacked!!!
