I bow to your superior knowledge. Such was not the case back in the 60s and 70s, though. It must have gone the same way as the rule about passing back to the keeper and other anachronisms.

I looked it up, and the kick is given from the spot of the offense. The offense occurs when, in this case, Bekteke touches the ball or interferes with an opponent. Hence the kick was correctly placed in our half.

I take back my criticism of Atkinson for that one. Maybe he was sleepy today because he'd been up all night reading up on the offside rule!

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

You also can't be offside if you're wearing a red shirt and white shorts.

Nor can you be sent off until you have committed at least three, and preferably four, yellow card offenses and/or two red card offenses.

It's often said that explaining the offside rule (especially to a woman) is extraordinarily difficult. The subtle changes that are made to the rule on a regular basis make the task even harder.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Or after 2nd, or possibly 3rd bookable offence happens, the captain intervenes, communicates with the ref, signals to his manager, and the player is subbed off, like Coqt***lin for Arsenal last season. Disgrace.

Agreed the old rule was far better and easier for everyone to understand.

Still rankles, that. In Arsenal's current state, I sincerely hope that we can get something from our forthcoming game with them. They and Turdchester Utd are the only 'top' teams we've not beaten since our return to the top flight.

Could the Fates play our tune finally this time?

Not counting any involving Zaha, obviously.

Nonsense! All it takes is the salt and pepper pots, a wine glass and a couple of place mats....... thought that was how everybody learned the offside rules

Coquelin should never make it to the end of any game.

Meanwhile, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Moan Utd get punished for their rotating, team professional fouling on Chelsea's Hazard last weekend. If only Clattenberg had shown the same, appropriate, spinal fortitude in last year's final. Yes, he was forced to show a number of yellow cards (and eventually a red*), but that belied the all-out assault that Utd perpetrated on our player's ankles and shins whenever they found themselves under threat.

* Smalling should've been red-carded twice prior to his actual dismissal: (1) for being the last man when bringing down Wickham; and (2) for a deliberate handball that stopped Wilf going through free and clear on their goal. Both happened within the first half of the fist half.

Atkinson has joined the no pens for Wilf brigade. He was so determined to rule out a pen when Wilf was sent tumbling in the fifth minute that he failed to spot that the offence was outside the area anyway. Sky commentators agreed it was a clear foul.
Atkinson also missed Cleverley elbowing Cabaye in the face. Straight red. I can't remember if that was after Cleverley got a yellow for fouling Wilf - in which case he should have been off for a second yellow.
