I'd love to see Kaikai, Dreher, Boateng and a couple of others given a go. Unfortunately, the stakes are so high in the PL that few teams are willing to try youngsters. Spurs, Southampton and Everton have been successful at doing this, but that's because they're all teams that are relatively secure in the PL and don't have to worry about relegation and all that would mean. What is sad is that even though we've got a huge catchment area, we haven't brought through anyone who has demanded a place in the starting line-up for several years now. We had a few youngsters on the bench last season like Dreher, Phillips, Husin, Win-Bassaka and Wynter, but none of them actually got on the pitch and I see that Wynter was one of those released last week. A few youngsters will get chances in the pre-season games, and under the new manager will have just as much of a chance to impress as the senior players. Doubt we've got any superstars ready to play, but it would be good to have a couple of players we could rely on as backup in the PL.

I think I’m in the minority in that I couldn’t give a monkeys whether our players are academy graduates. ALL players who play for Crystal Palace FC do so because it’s the best thing for their career at that time. None of them are fans. I don’t particularly identify with a player because he happened to come through our youth system. A goal scored by Benteke is just as enjoyable as one by Zaha. The players we field should be the best that we have available to us. Simple as that.

for the amount of minutes they played, and as much use they were last season we should be replacing ledders/campbell/flamini with kids from the academy, theres no point spending 10m on replacing these 3 on large (ish) wages when we could use kai-kai, dreyer & boateng for diddily squat.

Whilst it might be nice to have some academy youngsters make the first team I want the best players playing. Frankly our youngsters do not seem good enough and I would be completely against throwing them in just because they are from our academy. If they are good enough they will play. If they are not, hopefully we can sell them on and make some money.

Absolutely right Sherlock that they have to be good enough to play for the first team but we will not know this until they are tested. Taking KaiKai as an example, he has had a couple of Seasons on loan in the lower Leagues where he has done reasonably well and has been on our First Team's subs bench on several occasions. Our new manager said in yesterday's Press Conference that he believes in bringing young players through so it is highly likely that we will see KaiKai and others given a fair chance in pre-Season and possibly at the Asia Tournament. Hopefull, exciting times ahead. Come on Frank.

It's so true what fdb said about giving youngsters something to aim for , knowing that they will be given a chance will give the youngsters the appetite to keep improving instead of going stale thinking you'll never get the chance. Players like Kai Kai and dreher must be thrilled to have fdb in! Let's get every age group playing the new palace way , hopefully change the DNA of the club.

Of the 18 games Kai Kai played last season, he came off the bench in 12 of them, so it's not like he established himself as a first choice player for Brentford in that time. Not saying he won't make it, just that there isn't really much evidence right now to suggest he's going to be worthy of a regular place in the team.

It's all very well talking about 'Youth' being given a chance but they have to earn the right to be chosen so in essence they have to show enough ability to convince the manager that they are worth a place in the squad. If they aren't good enough we cannot throw them in to the rarefied atmosphere of the PL. We might be able to see how they get on in the 'League Cup' etc etc but they have to be good enough. It might take a while for our Academy to be 'Blessed' with sufficient talent - I note that De Boer gave the likes of Blind,Alderweireld a chance at Ajax - have we got a potential Blind or Alderweireld at our club ? Let's not forget that Ajax have had a wonderful academy for many, many years - we are probably 'Light years' away from that sort of standard. Edited by Willo (27 Jun 2017 9.10am)
