Could be playing poker on Sakho, Liverpool have form on holding out for their asking price, however I think more likely FDB has his own ideas on who to bring im We already have Dann, Tomkins, Kelly and Delaney who can all play CB. Plus, rumours are now swirling that FdB is after Veltman from Ajax, who can play RB & CB. Unless he plans on offloading Dann or Tomkins, there is little room for Sakho and much better need for 30 million to be spent elsewhere. Veltman is estimated as a 10 million purchase, and solves the RB problem while giving additional cover at CB.
We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

Someone I know from Holland who is an Ajax supporter texted me today saying he thinks that Veltman will join "On a short term" - maybe he meant "In a short time".

I'd be happy with our CB cover if I did not recall just how bad they were at times last season. It took the introduction of Sakho to add any defensive nous and quality and I can't imagine that they have all suddenly improved immensely on the summer break.

You have to put most of last year out of your mind. Pardew wasn't bothering with defensive drills or even fitness training, while both Dann and Tomkins had protracted injuries without ever fully recovering (mostly likely due to lack of fitness to start with). Dann is a fine CB and a pukka goal threat. Tomkins is excellent too. Now that they're fit (in both senses of the word) they will do just fine. Delaney and Kelly are ok backups for short stints.

Okay Ray, but which one do you fancy more? It's Scottie right?

As long as they stay fit which with previous form would be unlikely for an entire season.

You have to assume that one of Dann or Tomkins will be out for most of the season. Of course there's not an injury rule to say they can't overlap. If that were to happen Delaney would be a starter. That was the crux of our only bad run under Allardyce. This isn't harping back to Pardew, or lack of fitness, or lack of defensive drills. It is sadly fact that Delaney cannot cut it in the Premier League at his age (neither can much better players like John Terry) so we will need 2 CB's. If this Dutch chap can play right back I'd wager he'd soon displace Ward, so that leaves Sakho being the ideal choice to partner the non-injured member of Dann or Tomkins. If the 'worst' happened and neither Dann or Tomkins were injured, I'd say it would bring out the best in them to compete against eachother to partner Sakho. So in my mind Sakho is still vital, and I'd chuck 30 million at him even if he and the Dutch player (I'll learn his name eventually) we're our only signings.

from what I have heard we are after Tete who is a RB and Veltman. I get the impression Veltman is more of a CD who can play at RD too. Seems the combined cost of both would be around 14 mill, which is less than half the asking price for Sakho.

To me Sakho was a never say die backs to the wall centre half which was great for our counter attacking approach. If we are to see FdB introducing a more controlling type of game it may well be that a couple of players who fit the FdB style will be more productive than a big outlay on someone suited more to another style of play. Let us not forget Liverpool feel that Sakho do not fit their system. I am not saying Sakho is a poor player I am suggesting there might be better value out there that suits the FDB style.
