I say only let them in if they have something to offer us that is better than we already have. If they are doctors, then fine, if they are a professional of some sort, then fine. But why should people be able to come to our country and sponge of the Government?

It's got to change.

Don't get me started on this topic ...

Too soft ??? The whole of Western Europe is like a bloody soft teddybear. The Scandinavian countries have got it right .. still I don't hear anyone telling them they're racist. Mind you, they wouldn't give a f*** if they got that comment, they just say "internal politics, keep out of it", just like the Americans do for most of their decisions.

Yet we need to listen to every other countries (and the f***ing do-gooders in our own countries) ?? BS guys, pure BS

I wanna see us try it in the middle-east !! See how far we get !

finished

I think we should have the same immigration policy as Austrilia. Where if you want to move to the country you got to write a 5 page essay (maybe longer I cant remember) You have to have a place to live before you even enter the country and you have to find work within a month or you'll be kicked out

Are we talking about Asylum Seekers or economic migrants here? They are two very diiferent things with different policies.

If you want to come and live in this country, you have to attend an interview in the consulate in the Country you are from. You have to prove why you want to live in Britain and prove you have work and somewhere to live, or someone who will provide you with somewhere to stay and finacially support you.

It's not as easy as people think it is to get a visa to come and live and work here, or marry someone and live here, or to even come here on holiday.

or illegal immigrants? again ,the lumping in together that goes on in these threads.... spend more money for resources to process poeple quicker and weed out the bogus ones so the legit ones who have seen worse things than you can ever imagine, can have the safe haven they deserve and we can offer. then they can add to our ailing work force and boost our economy for us too - a win win situation.

How do they get over here in the first place to be 'processed'? I could understand if we had borders like on the continent but as an island do they just jump on a plane and arrive? If you did that in the states or in Oz or in most countries for that matter you'd be turned straight back around and put on the next flight home. In fact you cant even get onto an aeroplane or boat going to another country without the right documentation from Britain can you?

I recon we're a soft touch, I laugheds when a few years ago(ish) all those 'asylum seekers' tried to get to Oz on a boat and the government stopped them and were gonna let them rot at sea. They have the right idea.

So whilst someone is awaiting a decision on their case what do you think we should do with them?

I have seen cases from people in the UK who arrived in the early 1990's and there cases were taking over 3 years to process, now it can be a matter of months or weeks. Claims to asylum have as you may have noticed in the press decreased, there are improvements being made. Asylum seekers no longer recieve state benefits they are referred to a place called NASS (national asylum support service) where they recieve vouchers that can be spent in certain shops ie Tesco's. This money amounts to about £20 per week I can find out the exact amount if people want to know. They are also usually placed into the scummiest B+B's which cost up to £250 a week because of the housing shortage.

If they are given Reugee status or indefinate leave to remain, benefit wise they are treated with the same rules as us, single parents and pensioners are entitled to claim Income Support and people who are able to work are shipped off to the job centre where they are enrolled on courses to learn English and either find work or claim Job Seekers Allowance.

As for British citizenship they would not beable to claim that unless they have resided in this country fo 5 years since there claim has been accepted.

As for Refused asylum seekers, this is a joke and I agree the Governemnet has a lot to do in the deportation side of things but woth people being allowed to appaeal over and over again we can't kick then out. They cannot claim benefits whilst on appeal.

economic migrants are good, but 250,000 a year or round about is obviously an unhealthy number for any country to take in, it must be stopped.

What a lovely caring guy you are Steve.

Just think - and accident of birth and you could have been an asylum seeker on that boat...

JayT - the Gov't are introducing a citizenship test in the next few months. Not sure what the details are but it covers language/history/culture etc. with a written exam at the end.

I think it's a good idea. I think most immigrants would like to fit in - this might help.

The crux of the matter is that unemployment is very low with not enough people to fill the vacancies. You can solve this in 2 ways:

1. Economic migrants.

2. Train Brits in more skills to fill posts.

To be fair to this government - they are doing something about skills. From next year employees will be required to give time off to learn skills (up to the equivalent of 5 GCSEs) that will help. The government will pay for the training. Good idea I reckon.

Certain sections of our society would grind to a halt if they weren't run by migrants who are willing to jobs that we aren't.
People read about the number of people that Britain takes in without considering the number of people that leave and the number of people that die here every year. I don't know the figures, and I'm sure that more people enter Britain than leave it every year, but we should look at population figures rather than immigration figures to see how over-crowded we are becoming.

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
