Are we still going for Benteke or going out of business? I've forgotten now.

You're right of course. But the TV money has changed the transfer market. If we look around us some equivalent clubs are spending significant sums on strengthening their squads to improve their prospects. If we invest wisely we could be middle third or better. If we don't we're going to have to get used to bottom third and accept the risk of relegation.

It's an opportunity cost issue. If we use up all our cash on a gamble that only partially pays off or worse we have set back our progression. This is a huge leap of faith, worth making but certainly not at any price. There are alternatives, for example buy three cheaper players and anticipate that one will overachieve. A balance must be struck. Impatience is simply that. It looks like Liverpool are using every trick in the book but two can play at that game and our Board has some pretty good experience.

Here's another stat to put the Benteke deal in context:-

After the Pogba deal, somebody posted the following (presumably a Utd fan to justify the Pogba fee):-

Man Utd spending £89m on Pogba is the equivalent of Crystal Palace spending £15m on a player (as a percentage of turnover).

Inverting this fact, splashing £30m on Benteke would be the equivalent (in turnover terms) of Utd spending £188m on a player...

Doesn't sound so cheap now does it? Even Spurs picked up Jansson for less than £15m. I'm sure we must be able to find somebody in Europe who is better VFM.

Man U's turnover was 4 times more than our's and the tv money has increased again, by a lot. And the tv money doesn't have costs (meaning it's not a gross sales figure. It is there to be used on transfers and a certain amount allowed to increase wages each year) If you don't, you fall behind and get relegated.

Our biggest transfer to date is about £13m, I see why we are cautious it's a lot of money, with no guarantee.

It's a difficult call, remember how Goldberg got ripped off by bigger clubs, the board are making sure that doesn't happen again.

The club is bigger than any player, look at Leeds, Charlton, Bolton, Bradford etc all got broken by greedy agents and players.

Have faith in the board and we will have a club worth supporting in years to come.

Glory hunters need to look for another club or need to be realistic.

Very good post, but in reality, the club has received huge funding from American investment,tv money and significant funds raised from the sales of Gayle, McCarthy,Bolasie and tonight,Jedi.
Surely, given our lack of even one reliable striker at the present time,is it not unreasonable and indeed vitally important, that some of these funds are not reinvested in at least two quality strikers.
To make comparisons with the Golberg era and the demise of the clubs you mention is slightly misleading,in view of the totally different financial situation of Premiership Clubs today, but we are all entitled to an opinion.

Why would he want to go to Turkey, the place is a right f***ing two and eight these days. I'm assuming he's got a family and kids, doesnt strike me as a good move for the player, both in footballing and personal terms...

So if you spend money then you stay up? Like Newcastle did last season?

Sh1te manager was why they went down. Did you not notice how if they changed manager 2 weeks earlier they would've stayed up?
