Time will tell.
I suspect there will be a few bumps in the road along the way and perhaps we will get better as the season progresses.

That is also my take. I am guessing it will not start well and we may not see any dividend until perhaps the New Year when the team has better gelled and (hopefully) Eze and Olise return to full match fit. Flirting with bottom 3 and then climbing steadily to good mid-table.

He now has a decent coaching team, some really good pros, a few excellent acquisitions and perhaps 2 or 3 young talents in Banks, Olimabu and Rak-Sakhi to utilise.

The only certainty is that you will predict defeat for every game but then lavish praise where we do well.

In our first matches there are obvious games to target - such as Brentford and then perhaps Brighton, any other points would be a bonus but we may see the odd draw or upset. Hopefully, we will win the games we should win.

Well, I was right 18 times in the PL last season which was nearly 50% of the games played !!

Willo TBF you’re predictions are generally pants..!!

You’ve been predicting that we’ll be relegated every season since we returned to the Prem - so that’s 8 years and your record is 0% - so entering our 9th season what’s your prediction for this season?

Personally I think it will take time for the new players to settle in - but IMO we’ve already got a much better squad than we had this time last year..!!

I’m really looking forward to this season - PV is a breath of fresh air and clearly the board are backing him.

For me this season is all about building and getting the team to gel - matching last seasons finishing position should be the aim - but will be a much better watch than some of the turgid performances we had to endure last season. Then kick on from there..!!

Still think we’ll see 2 or 3 new arrivals yet.

Come on Viera and COYP..!!

You are absolutely correct !
Alas, prognostication in relation to our fate at the end of the season is certainly not my strong suit!!

A friend who has worked for NYCFC recently sent me unsolicited praise for both PV and Kristian Wilson, saying they're two of the very best he's ever worked with, and "even better people outside the football pitch."

I am much more hopeful about their leadership than I am about our collective patience.

Here's my big concern...

Vieira wants to play 'good' football out from the back, and will probably stick with that no matter what. New signings or not, this is still a case of a manager coming in with a 'philosophy' rather than looking at the squad and designing a method that fits the players.

What is best between a fixed philosophy and an adaptive one is debatable, but Vieira has never tested his ideas at a club our size in this league. If you're going to commit to a set style of play regardless of the club and squad then you should at least have reason to believe it will be effective. It being what you 'believe in' isn't enough, especially when your new team has no previous history of succeeding that way and that style has led to relegation for so many clubs our size.

Right now the players say they are keen, but they would say that. What they want more than anything is to win, and if Vieira isn't as likely to facilitate that as Hodgson or Allardyce were then they will want to go back to the old ways quickly, just as they did in the promotion season.

Hopefully we'll get the points we need playing good stuff, but I think if Vieira is going to stick with his tactics through thick and thin then he's far more of a gamble than his relative inexperience alone suggests.

Agree on the general concern.

There was though one piece on him I read recently that suggests he may not be quite the purist he was once and has developed a slightly more pragmatic streak as he has progressed in his managerial career and got further from his Man City roots.

He certainly used a range of formations at Nice and wasn't committed to that form of tactical purity. In fact some of the criticism I'ver seen is that his teams at Nice were frankly muddled without a settled style of play or formation. He was strong on philosophy but weak on tactics.

That sort of ties in with what he says here.

"Taking risks to score as many goals as possible is something that I am ready to do. What matters for me is getting the most out of my players while playing well. I don’t think there is any system or style of play that is better than another. Great coaches like Mourinho, Wenger or Guardiola have different philosophies, but they have all won, like Antonio Conte has done at Chelsea.”

I've just been rewatching the episode in When Eagles Dare when the players and Parish revolted against Holloway and insisted that the Dougie system was reinstated. Let's hope history doesn't repeat!

Another trip into the unknown for us and one I’m looking forward to. A tough tackling box to box midfielder he was, and he will expect the same from his team. It’s been well mentioned that he wants to play the passing game and feed our attackers early and in dangerous positions, which is what we want.

A far cry from how Roy got us to play, so everybody has got their wish. Can you imagine Connor Gallagher breaking up play and feeding Wilfred, Tekkers and Eze early in the last third of the pitch?

Sure we will get some beatings, but hopefully nothing like last year where our defence was always in the treatment room and it showed in our goals against column.

I think we are in for an interesting season for a change…

You don't know that and are just phrasing a guess as fact

We have for sure raised the quality of our squad in this window. Just hope the manager will be a bit pragmatic when the "play ball out for defence" does not work.
Our DNA consists of hard work and quick breaks. Joachim Andersen showed last season that he is capable of some great, long passes.
