My late father started supporting Palace when they played at the Herne Hill cycle track (probably around 1916),and he reckoned that Johnny Byrne was the finest player ever to wear the shirt. He was my hero in the late 1950s and there have been some very fine players representing us since then but in my opinion he was the greatest.

I remember Johnny as my hero back when I first started watching Palace at Selhurst, standing in the mud at the Whitehorse Lane end, behind the goal of my number 1 hero Vic Rouse,(who I tried to be like..fat chance.)

Johnny , was in a class of his own, just like Wilf,Yannick, are today..what a player..nobody could touch him, unbelievable for the day, as don't forget the ball was leather, and a damn sight heavier, more so when wet.. which was often.. the boots were like 'diving boots', and heavy, but Johnny performed 'magic'..I for one think Johnny Byrne deserves to be remembered in a big way at Selhurst..so how about it Steve?

No sorry those two are only fit to clean his boots, he was a brilliant player, and a family friend he was my uncle Vince Blore's best friend and was always round our house when I lived in Upper Selsdon road between 1953 and 1958.

Totally agree
Current fans will NEVER realise how great he was
In my school holidays I used to watch Palace training
at Sanderstead, and many times in the training matches
Budgie used to play in goal,
when the play was down the other end of the field he used to put me in goal and take penalties,i don't remember stopping one.
Budgie would have been the ideal striker for us today,
how much would he have been worth in todays transfer valuations?
One of our REAL greats, come on Steve do something

Just to add my simple memories of the great Johnny Byrne. I remember that manager Cyril Spiers first played him at outside left and the young Byrne, always red-faced, used to chase anything that moved! The crowd loved him, not only for his obvious skill but also his tenacity and commitment to the Palace cause.

Within a year or two he was the star of the side and I can still picture him chesting down Vic Rouse's goal clearances or trapping the dropping ball on his thigh before turning past the defender - all in one silky movement. We had never seen anything like it in those dark and distant Div. 3 South and Div. 4 days. What a player he was. He could do it all. Simply one of our best ever!

My first match as a Palace fan was the 9-2 win against Accrington Stanley...I was 10 and it cost me 1/6d entrance. = to just over 7p in todays money.
Johnny Byrne scored 4 goals that day and was so obviously in a totally different class to everyone else.
Personally I would put him above any Palace player since and that includes the great Ian Wright. He was simply the best.
Having read the article I am gobsmacked. Obviously this was before Mr. Parish's time. But Steve...if you consider yourself a true Palace man...and I know you are, you must correct this injustice. Without Budgie Byrne in the early Sixties, Palace could never have progressed to a position from where you have so brilliantly taken them forward from in the last four years. Please reinstate Palace's all time hero... he was our foundation, the kick start from which we have never looked back and you know all about those.

Thanks for your support but it seems nobody at the club is listening. I have heard of others' experiences of SP denying the Palace past which is hugely disappointing.

One positive note is that I've had a response from Mark Bright on Twitter using #johnnybyrne so we'll see.
I'm going to try and build up some momentum to WH game on 17 Oct.
