Everyone got short term memory with McCarthy? Would parry most shots against him back into play usually to the opposition forward. Awful.

He was crap. Conceded 30 yd grubber v Norwich then let a Son shot go straight through him v Spurs then beaten at the near post v Chelsea. Falcao i think. Amazingly we won two of those games

You are surely having a laugh. If you have watched any of Southampton’s matches lately you would have seen that he is a massive improvement on what we have currently got and we should never have got rid of him.

It is probably fair to say when McCarthy was at Palace, our goalkeeper coach at the time was not really have any effect on the players.

Roy’s coaching staff have done wonders with WH. He looks so much more confident these days.

Perhaps the same has happened at Southampton for McCarthy? Probably much better coach than when he was at Palace.

McCarthy was a liability when he was with us and as described by Rossboss he had an unerring knack of parrying the ball straight to an opposition striker.

Admittedly he has improved since then, but I wouldn’t have any regrets and don’t feel we have mugged ourselves off. He is still prone to making fundamental errors, as demonstrated against Saints this evening.

A really decent keeper will win us points. Given the fine margins in the Premier League that could be the difference between toying with relegation and achieving a top half finish. It’s a false economy not to invest in this key position, where the player’s performance impacts so immediately and directly on the result. Hopefully Guaita is that man.

Under Super Al we had in Andy Woodman possibly the worst goalkeeper coach but he was Als mate and ex Palace - he didn’t even look the part !
I was one of Wayne Hennesseys biggest critics but I have been pleasantly surprised at his form since Dean Kylie came in. I still dont think he’s good enough to be number 1 but he will be a good number 2 under Guiata.
McCarthy is now not only shot stopping but he is dominant when crosses come in - he looks so confident as opposed to the nervous, accident prone keeper that we saw. Pardew sold him because it was always somebody else’s fault - never his or his best mate. Unfortunately we never saw the best of McCarthy.
As for Woodman I doubt that he will get another top job unless Super Al finds another gullible club and that must be huge odds against now with WBAs revival after his departure .

Indeed. There was a thread last season re the worst ever Palace signings and McCarthy was on the list.

At present the Head of goalkeeping at Southampton is Dave Watson and both Eddie Niedzwiecki and Kelvin Davis are part of the 1st team coaching setup.

What Dave Watson the central defender ? Seems odd to have a defender as a goalkeeping coach when they’ve got Eddie Niedzwiecki there !

No, the Ex-Barnsley goalkeeper who has built a reputation as an excellent coach.Hodgson got him on board to work with Clemence for the Euro Championships.
